How to permanently save a restore point

I set a restore point 2 days ago manually. Today I have found it has been deleted and I may have to reformat because of this.

I set my drive to hold 1.15gb in size for restore points. The current restore point is a mere 200mb yet it STILL decided to delete the old ones. Previously I've checked only to find 0 restore points despite the settings being adequate.

It seems restore points simply don't work on my OS. They show up for a handful of hours and are automatically deleted (even the manually made ones).

What is the solution here?

The modern way to do this is to get a perfect install using the same Best Practices in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then save a backup image externally so if WIn7 becomes irreparable you can reimage the HD or its replacement in 20 minutes.

Meanwhile you can add more restore points that last longer by apportioning more disk space for them: System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage. I use 10-20% on problem install.s

Thanks, I'll definitely make sure to backup an image this time when I'm done.

I created a few restore points for a test and I noticed something. It saved 4 restore points at a total space of just 350mb or so. I'm gonna guess a restore point from the day before would end up taking more space than two that are ten minutes apart, but I'm starting to doubt this is why my restore points don't save.
For one I've never allocated more than 1gig in the past, and in the past restore points saved for a full-week almost.
Secondly, there are many times I have zero restore points, which doesn't make sense seeing as I've allocated over 1GB. There should at least be one, probably more, but at least one... right?
It's like as if there is something that is automatically deleting restore points after X amount of hours since creation, X being less than Y, where Y is amount of hours between restore point creations.

Please start a new topic, do not hijack someone else's, second do you not have a recovery partition that you can use to repair windows with?

Have you ran any malware/anti-virus scans lately? Some of them erase restore points.

First I set my restore points space to 10% with no problems.
I remove restore points as needed.
In you case I would check and see if you have some kind of program used for cleaning things up on your computer that might be removing your restore points. Example: Advanced System Care.

^Hmm I'm not sure what I have installed that would be doing that, I generally avoid installing programs outside of the basic applications I use (and some games).

At this point I'll just be doing a reformat, no one ever likes to admit it's "that time", but it's that time, there's some other lingering issues with this computer anyways. I'm even getting driver errors since I ****ed with the registry =/

Moving forward, is there some way to simply save a restore point for X amount of days? This whole allocate 10% yada-yada isn't the solution I'm looking for as I'm positive I've never used more space for restores and didn't always have this problem. In fact I just checked, there is not 1 restore saved currently, despite 1.5GB allocated. Yesterday 4 restores took up just 350MB of space.
Backup images are nice but with limited space I can only keep so many.
It's not something I care to be paranoid about, so ideally I'd like to set some sort of schedule for restore points to be saved once per week, and NEVER deleted before X amount of days, no matter what. I would rather it refuses to create new restore points than it replaces any old ones.
If this isn't possible, more specifically just the ones I create manually need to be saved until manually deleted. I want to disable Windows' determination of when to delete my manually created restores.

Are these restores just a simple file or set of files? If so would rooting the directory to copy all new contents to another directory work?

Is there maybe a 3rd party program that does the same thing as system restore?

The System Restore has to be based upon allocating space due to if there is no space, it can't save them. Everytime there is an MS Update, a Restore Point is made. I also manually make one every Wednesday morning. I have my Outlook set to remind me.

I highly prefer that it doesn't save new restores as opposed to deleting old ones that were created manually. Is there a way to achieve this?

It also doesn't matter when or if I create them myself, once a week or once a day, no difference. Once a few hours past, all restores are deleted. No matter what. Even keeping my computer idle with nothing having downloaded, updated and no tasks scheduled, it still deletes any restore within X amount of hours created.

Other than suggestions that have been posted I know of no other answers. Just increase your storage to 10% and try it for a few days and see if it works. Restore points need a little elbow room. You can always do a clean install a few days from now.

What per cent is the allocation now set for? How much can you realistically apportion?

It was at 2%. However if the total size was 350mb when saving 4 restore points last night, I really don't understand how it hasn't saved one today or how it makes sense that this has to do with allocation. When I had set the 4th restore point last night, it didn't choose to delete any of the other 3, which means it had enough space allocated for it. The fact that not even one is saved now should lead us to believe this isn't an allocation issue, should it not?

I've none the less set it to 20% and set a manual restore. I'll check it again in a few hours.

Beyond this, even at 100% and not deleting old ones, this still doesn't solve my problem exactly. I don't want to have to have 15 restores just so the one I created manually the week before doesn't get deleted. I'd like to separate my manual restores from the pack so they aren't deleted based on available space or some timer. 3rd party program installation is acceptable. Of course if there's no solution I'll have to make due with the other suggestions here, however I shall keep my fingers crossed for now!

Some times we will never know why Windows 7 does some of the things it does. That is just the way it is. If you fight Windows 7 you will always loose.
