Wow! There are far more replies than I expected (not that I was being provacative). I thought there might be a lot of irate comments from people saying they liked Windows 7, but there are some that seem (almost) to agree with me!
Some of the pro-Windows 7 are good and you can respect them (their writers, I mean). Others are plain silly and sarcastic which you can ignore. At least, I will. (If the cap fits, wear it). I suspect I have rattled a few chains daring to question Windows 7.
I wonder how many of the pro-7s are Microsoft employees? No, I mustn't think that . . . !
I have downloaded Classic Shell (thanks for the information, Indianatone). Mind you, the Start Menu seems to have kicked in before I agreed to it or "asked" it to. [Is there an easy way to go back to the Windows 7 interface? In case I need to?] PS I have since found the uninstall instructions !
I should say that it wasn't that aspect I was getting uptight about. It was just that, for instance, I liked the My Documents (index) page in XP which contained icons that looked like small filing cabinet files and from which you could easily select the file/folder you wanted. The larger, fancier ("A4") folders aren't so accommodating, it seems to me. [I have since found and used the medium icons setting which takes me back a step nearer to the "filing cabinet files" icons.]
Windows XP may be 11 years old (none of us are getting any younger) but I liked it, as I might have mentioned, but just because something is new it doesn't mean it is better. I have a number of other "upgraded" software programmes which I find as simplified as 7 and, therefore, difficult to use. I won't name them. Suffice it to say that I had no trouble with, and liked, previous versions of the various software items which weren't dumbed down.
I only had Windows 7 because I needed to upgrade my computer (seven years old and three generations out of date!) and 7 was the only OS available. I needed more powerful hardware so that I could use my Pinnacle Studio video editing programme - otherwise I would have stuck with the old computer.
O.K., Pinnacle is old (like me). But it was - as many will know and others will not - taken over by Avid and now Corel. Both companies have made changes (again, I'm not sure all were for the better). But if manufacturers don't bring out new systems how are they going to keep sales up? Who wants an 11-year-old system? (well, I don't mind). Without sales the manufacturers wouldn't be in business to build the furture software and OSs.
P.S. I forgot to say . . . I DO have Windows XP on my computer thanks to help from my local IT shop who transferred one of the three hard drives (the other two will need special adapter to make the connections) from my old computer. This gave me all the old files - but not the old icons
. However, I need to find a quicker way into it.
From the Windows 7 "opening page" I have to follow this route to access one of my websites (for instance): Computer > Local Disk (E) > Documents and Settings > (my name) > My Documents > My Webs > (website name). There has to be a quicker, more way of doing it! Of course, I have to click on "Editing with Microsoft FrontPage" (aaargh, another old system!) to edit the web pages.
Then again, as anyone who understands the system will realise, I am not a Windows 7 Professional either. As most will realise, that is the OS version I had to buy (having paid for the basic Home version with the computer) to be able to get XP Mode!
