Hi there,

I've had problems with my HP laptop ever since I got it with it shutting down after 2-3 hours of sleeping. Not a battery issue since it still happens while plugged into mains. Also, whenever I try to hibernate, it shuts down instead.

When I turn it on again after it shuts down (regardless of sleep or hibernation), it says (paraphrased) "Windows was not shut down correctly, please choose: Normal boot, Safe Boot, etc." I've searched google and these forums but to no avail.

Any suggestions on where to start looking for a solutions?! I'd like to avoid a re-installation if I can...

Thanks in advance!

My specs are:
W7 Pro x64
Core i5 2430M
8Gb RAM
ATI Radeon 6770M 1Gb

Anyway, this one looks suspicious to me:

It looks to me like it's set to do nothing when a Low Battery is detected so eventually it will just shutdown.

Thanks again for your reply. I'll change those settings and see if that makes a difference. I'm not sure that's the entire problem though, since it still happens when plugged into AC power.

After browsing similar questions, it seemed some people reported a driver issue causing a BSOD after sleeping for a while which caused the crashing. I've never actually caught my laptop in the act so no idea if this is a possibility, but how would I go about checking this??

Cheers

See if there are any .dmp files in C:\Windows\minidump. If yes, download and run BlueScreenView and see what it tells you.

Thanks Ztrucker. Downloaded that and ran but nothing in the folder so no results from BlueScreenView. I've updated a few drivers but haven't had time to check if there's any difference (not hopeful though). I'll leave it sleeping tonight and see what happens in the morning.

Are you still the HP preinstalled Win7 with all of the corrupting factory bloatware and duplicate utilties which throttle Win7? Most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which resolves most issues like this.

If not at the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware to see if that helps by pulling some of the freeloaders off of Win7's back.

Thanks gregrocker. I think I'll probably end up doing this (unfortunately). I've been putting it off since I use the laptop for working every day and don't really have the time to mess with it at the moment.
My other concern with this is warranty issues. Would this cause any problems? I'm not worried about the recovery side of things, but if there were hardware problems, would I still be covered under warranty? Any thoughts or comments?

Thanks again guys!

It explains in CLean Reinstall tutorial that after reinstalling you should not tell your OEM Tech Support that you have done so as they will most often not support it. But the support is not good anyway so you're better off coming here for that, and if you need hardware service requiring it to be shipped back you can run Recovery beforehand after saving a backup image of the Clean Reinstall.

I should mention that in all of the thousands of Clean Reisntalls we've helped with here I've not seen a reported case of this being a problem.

Great! Thanks for your advice. I'll have a go at that over the Christmas break when I have some time off. I know I should've done it straight away when I bought the beast...

Well it seems that something I did, like a driver update has fixed the problem?? It slept all night and was still asleep this morning and everything was still there! Haven't tried hibernate yet but fingers crossed. I will do a reinstall when I get some time off though just to ensure nothing comes back.

Thank you both for your help and I'll mark this as solved.
