This morning I left my laptop on, after 2 hours it was in Sleep mode (as exspected)
No actions would wake the OS. Mouse move, space bar, any keyboard key, boot button.
The screen was black. I could hear the HDD running (normal sounds)

At night I have been 'Hiberanting" the OS manually for the last 4 days.
Lots of brower windows plus tabs on each brower instance.
12+ TXT files open on an external USB HDD (my data-drive)

After some desparate key-poking I did an emergency shutdown (by holding the boot button down)
- and scrifice any open TXT files.
After shutdown, waited approx 2 mins -> cold booted -> no problems.
I have rebooted (cold) several times and no problems

My laptop is always on mains power.
Power setting "Balanced" set at 30 minutes to sleep
Hybrid Sleep is OFF
Hibernate after : 1440 minutes (24 hrs)
Allow wake timers : Disabled
C:\ drive ... 204 GB free of 249 GB
External data drive (data partition) ... 33 GB free of 50 GB

Did a search of PM-forum for "Black Screen" ... but not a lot of results with solutions
One thing is the

Would appreciate some help on what might be the/a problem, thank you :)

Wasn't sure if this thread should be in BSOD ... I am not getting BSOD

Win-7 PRO x64
OS was cleaned installed at a PC shop about 12 months ago.
- since then graphics have been very slow
- when a lot of files are open creates multiple shadows of dragged windows
- I mostly use Metapad360 (TXT files) and browser (Palemoon)

After the emergency shutdown (by holding the boot button down), did you let check disk to run?
Why was OS cleaned installed at a PC shop? Why didn't you do a Factory recover?
- Schedule a disk check (chkdsk c: /f). Reboot
- Do a system file check. On a CMD window type sfc /scannow
