Boy that's a good question and I'm not sure. This is the first mobo/bios/ssd that I could put into AHCI mode. This was a clone of an install to a Vertex III via Apricorn software and link which came off without a hitch. Maybe I need to get the Samsung software out that came with the drive and see what I can do to correct ?

If you have an Intel system try the Iastor driver for it.

Alignment is very important, you should be getting an ASSSD total score of 100 point more than what you have.
If you can't get it aligned from the tutorial, consider a clean install.

Update on Samsung SSD 840/840 Pro Failures

In our review of Samsung's SSD 840 Pro I noted that my drive died shortly after I completed testing. Samsung sent me a replacement, which also stopped working (although it still pulled current) after a couple of days. Kristian's Samsung SSD 840 review sample shared a similar fate.

I spoke with Samsung about this problem a couple of weeks ago and was told that there was a bug in the pre-production firmware (version 2B0Q/5B0Q for 840 Pro/840) loaded on our drives. All retail samples should ship with a newer firmware revision (3B0Q/6B0Q) that have this bug fixed. To confirm what firmware revision is on your drive, look at the end of the hardware id string for the SSD in Device Manager.

Samsung sent me an 840 Pro with the updated firmware and so far I haven't had any issues. I'm trying to retrace my steps in bricking the drive and things are looking good thus far. As always, if things change I will update you all.

Alan, your alignment is still not right. With a clean install that should normally not happen. Why don't you predefine an aligned partition on the SSD and install into this. Use cmd of the installation disc.

Diskpart
List disk
Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your SSD in List disk)
Clean
Create partition primary align=1024
Format fs=ntfs quick
Active
Exit

Yea, I know Alan. I did too for a long time, but found it's the best $20 I ever spent. In fact I used it 3 times last night switching SSDs from one machine to another. It took me an hour. A lot better than 2 clean installs. It's also the best backup you can get.

It will transfer between any HDD to SSD. Also works SSD to SSD and HDD to HDD.
The best $20 I spent also.

Alan with the other high-dollar listed in your specs, why skimp on something needed that's 20 bucks? I've used Paragon too.

I have to agree - the Paragon Migration Tool is the easy, three click way to transfer the OS. I have used it too because I once got it for free.

However, the manual transfer procedure is a lot more fun and you know what you are doing. I do though always first copy the bootmgr from the system partition to C: (always get spanked by Greg because you lose some of the system partition function). But that way I get rid of the pesty system partition and need to only transfer the C: partition. And the system partition functions such as 'restore from the recovery partition' I don't need anyhow. For that I have images.

It's really not the 20.00 for Paragon, it's that I have the full Apricorn SSD transfer suite, The full '10 version of Acronis as well the Samsung comes with a Norton transfer tool which I've not used. Regarding my back up stratagy I have Memeo AutoSync and I'm real happy. Speaking with Samsung they said that a total wipe tool could help and then do a complete fresh install as imaging the drive could just bring over the same issues. What I'm going to try first is Apricorn copy to a Vertex III drive then wipe the Samsung and bring that image back and see what that nets me. If still an issue then either wipe the drive again and clean install or call for a replacement SSD. Really the way it sits right now it's wicked fast and getting me by but I will try to find some time over the next few days/week and see what happens. I don't doubt that the Paragon software isn't top flight but I'm thinking there could be residual info left on the drive that's the issue or it's just got some sectors bad.

The Samsung Magician has a secure erase feature. You will have to 'hot plug' it, but that's usually necessary with whatever secure erase program you use.

I've heard Greg say that too, but I can't figure out what I'm missing. I still get into safe mode, startup repair and everything else. It may be that Greg is used to HP and Dell and their recovery partitions that you would lose.
