Factory restore now my drivers are not installing properly?

My laptop is an inspiron n5110 and before my warrenty expired i had to have the hard drive replaced. Its been maybe a year or two since that happened. My computer was not updating with windows update since mid oct. and my firewall was down for i dont know how long. I had the IT guy at my work look at it and somehow my BYTES (i think thats what it was) driver was deleted from my computer and my java update somewhere along the line had corrupted my updates too. He said to do a restore and if i wanted he could completly wipe my hardrive clean for me. Well i did a factory restore yesterday and finished installing the last two disks today. Now i cannot connect to the internet and it is saying my drivers were not downloaded correctly. Should i do a factory restore again or have the IT guy wipe it clean? We even hooked up my computer directly to the router through an eithernet cord.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello kiefer and welcome to Seven Forums.

Just my personal opinion and others may disagree, but since you've already tried a factory restore, I'd go ahead and let your IT person do the clean install. It will eliminate all the factory bloatware that comes along with a factory restore and give you a better running computer. You might show this tutorial to your IT guy. It was prepared by one of the Forum experts and I've used it on a Dell Inspiron and a Sony Vaio. Made a big difference in how they perform. And here are the Dell drivers for your n5110.

Thank you Marsmimar, I gave the laptop to my IT guy and he said he was able to install the drivers I needed to finish the factory restore. I can log on the internet with it and it seemed okay until I put my documents and folders back on the computer by my usb memory stick. Then it freezes up for 10min to a half hour or longer. This computer is driving me nuts!! Can I do the complete erase my self? I asked the IT guy to clean the hard drive but he didn't so I don't want to ask him to look at it a third time.http://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=52246​

Many, many people have done a clean reinstall using gregrocker's tutorial.

He recommends that you read the tutorial (and all accompanying links) completely (several times, if necessary) until you are sure you understand it. If you have any questions, ask before you begin the procedure. Or at least have a second fully operational machine available.

Since the laptop worked fine before you plugged in the 'USB stick', the issue may be originating from the data in the storage device. You also mentioned in the original post about running the laptop unprotected, from the 'firewall' point-of-view. It is likely that your laptop was infected; it may have affected the 'data backup' in the 'USB key' as well.

Would like to know if an 'anti-virus/firewall' was installed and updated in the laptop after the 'factory restore'. If yes, did you scan the 'USB stick' to check for an infection? As correctly suggested by 'marsmimar', you may refer to the 'clean reinstall tutorial'; useful steps. Any 'software corruption' in the laptop is likely to get fixed with the reinstall. However, an 'anti-virus' should be installed and updated after the 'fresh install' on priority.

Computer may freeze up due to hardware issues also. You may also want to run 'hardware diagnostics' to check for the 'hardware functionality':
- Power off the laptop
- Power it back on and at 'Dell splash screen', repeatedly tap < F12 >
- Use 'arrow keys' to highlight < Diagnostics > and tap < Enter >
- Capture the error code details, if any (and report)

One of the fixes for this error message (broadband connection) is to rename this windowssystem32 driver,
raspppoe.sys. But the os tells me I need to be a TrustedInstaller. So how do I change this driver name?

So my husband ran the hardware diagnostic program and my computer passed but it took about 8hrs to run the program. I didnt scan my memory sticks before putting the folders back on the computer. I did scan them just now with free avast antivirus program and they were clean. We have not wiped the hard drive clean yet and my husband thinks its another bad hard drive.

I dont know how long my fire wall had been off but i noticed i had 31 updates and my mcafee wasnt updating. I did some investigating and figured out that a program (wether i downloaded or it helped itself to my computer) deleted my update running drivers. When we did a factory restore i had issues again with some drivers not uploading from the disk.

Also wanted to add it is freezing a ton! Sometimes it will freeze 5-10 min. Now it is freezing more than i can use it.....

Hi kiefer,

Factory installed 'hardware diagnostics' generally take only a few minutes to complete the test cycle; the advance version (custom test) may take close to an hour. Surprised to hear that it took '8 hours' in your case.

Please share the 'diagnostics utility' that was used; if you used 'PC Checkup' utility inside the 'Windows environment', I recommend you to run the 'on-board diagnostics' to see what happens.

To run the 'hardware diagnostics', you may find the following steps useful:
- Power off the laptop > Power it back on and at 'Dell splash screen, repeated tap 'F 12 key' > Use 'arrow keys' to highlight 'Diagnostics' and tap 'Enter key' (Laptop enters in the Diagnostics environment) > Capture the 'error message' if any (If the laptop stays within this environment for a long time, please observe and share the component that is being scanned at that time)

so i did the f12 hardware diagnostics last night after coming out of safe mode (it blue screend and didnt shut down properly).

the 'hard drive O' took about 2.5 hrs scanning just that. i also clicked on the advanced memory scan which took a half hour.

it passed all tests but didnt seem to freeze much if at all....

Please load 'BIOS defaults' and recheck performance
- Power off the laptop > Power it back on and as 'Dell splash screen' appears, repeatedly tap 'F2 key' > Tap 'F9 key' to 'restore BIOS defaults' > Tap 'F10 key' to 'Save Settings' (You may find the below mentioned reference image useful)
- Check if the status of 'Fixed HDD' (Is the 'hard drive' detected? Capture the status and share)

Check the performance of your laptop again. If the issue persists, you may try a 'fresh Windows Reinstall'. Since the 'Hardware Diagnostics' have passed, it is likely to be a 'software related issue'.

Please refer to the 'clean reinstall guide' shared by 'marsmimar' in the early part of this thread. It is a comprehensive document and should help a great deal. (Please backup personal data before reinstalling Windows; it leads to data loss)

I am getting ready to do a clean reinstall and have read the 'clean reinstall guide' but have a Question on step # 4. It says to 'make your recovery disks' can i not use the disks that came with the computer used for factory reinstall? If i cannot use them can i save the programs on a memory stick instead of using a disk?

Many newer computers don't even come with recovery disks, let alone an actual Windows 7 install disk. The owners of these newer computers are expected to create their own recovery media. Step 4 was written as a reminder for those folks. As long as you have factory provided recovery disks you can disregard Step 4.
