XP mode fails to install on a dual boot machine....

Running XP dual boot with Win 7 64. Tried to install the XP mode VM but no joy. The install goes fine but when I reboot Win 7 says FAILURE TO CONFIGURE UPDATES ----REVERTING CHANGES and I am back to Win 7 again.

Is my dual boot setup stopping me from running the XP VM?

Thanks,

J T

It should not make any difference what so ever if you have a dual boot system. The virtual machine will not see your XP installation unless you share it. Do you have virtualization enabled in you bios? Try downloading the VM software again just incase it got corrupted.

Never made any BIOS changes didn't know it was needed

Hello,

Sorry I had posted i the wrong group. I agree that the two shouldn't 'see' each other at all, but I had to ask since I have tried multiple times to install the VM and XP and it fails every time.

I see nothing in my BIOS that mentions virtualization, I have the MB book open and see no reference to it. The "How To" by Fred Langa never mentioned that at all either way OFF or ON.
I DO see that the "Vanderpool Technology" in the BIOS is Enabled, some sites say that refers to virtualization... I dunno but it's ON!

Also I did d/l the XP and the VM a few says ago rather than installing them as soon as I got them, I will go back and get them again. Seems odd that they both indicate that they installed OK. I had my virus scanner and other protection OFF when I did the install.

Thanks,

I'll get after it! :D

Unable to make any progress!

Hi,

No matter what I do IE: getting fresh copies of both files and installing them they do not appear in the start menu. Even rebooting makes no difference, yet in Control Panel I can see that XP Mode is installed.

What to do now? I can't imagine that I can't get it to run, but on the other hand I guess it goes with the territory :(

Thanks

J T

Try VM Ware

I think in a case like this the best thing you can do is to download the free VM Ware Player. VMware Player: Run Windows 8, Chrome OS on a Virtual PC
Then go to file import Windows XP mode.
This is a much better machine than M$ as it is current and has a greater feature set. M$ seems to have let their own machine go out of date.

But I don't have Win 8 and have no intention of getting it. I don't like it many levels. That said I may try VMware or VirtualBox. I don't know if I can use the copy of XP I got with trhe XP mode or must I use an XP disc to install it?

Plus my friend after hearing of my plight went and installed the M$ one with no trouble at all it went right in and ran as advertised. I am about ready to blow 7 out and re-install it again for the 3rd time. I have had more trouble with this freaking thing than ALL the previous Windows versions I have used going back to win3.0! :P

Thanks again,

Windows 8 comes from the website as it is one of the many operating systems it will run. Glad you got it fixed. If you need a more advanced virtual machine VM Ware player is really good.

Sorry to mislead you ....

I mistyped when I said my firend got it installed....................! He DID but on HIS machine!

I never got it working using the M$ stuff.

Can't understand why it behaves that way, saying it's installed and then won't run. There are no errors during the install process but when it goes to update, that's when it fails.

Interestingly enough the DOS program I wanted to run using the VM will not run on his machine. We've spent a lot of time fooling with .PIF files and still can't get it to run. That program is why I wanted to use the VM.

Apologies!

Do you have enough room on your hard drive to decompress the XP install? In your windows 7 start menu there should be 2 icons, one for Virtual PC and one for XP mode.

Indianatone,

There never have been any icons in my START menu that's the trouble.

BUT! Today I got Virtual Box and installed it with a copy of XP Pro, it installed and ran immediately. Plus it shows in my START menu as it should so I am all set.

I haven't a clue why the MS one didn't work but after 5 times installing and removing it it's gone!

VBox seems to be fine and I can now run the 16 Bit DOS tracking program I have used for 30 years!
A bit tricky but it works, seems like when the VM isn't running the clock loses time and needs reset. Beyond that there is no trouble. Oddly enough my Avast Virus Scanner seems to be protecting the VM as well, never thought it would do that but it does.

Regards and thanks for hanging in there with me!

That is good :thumbsup:I also use Virtual box from time to time. You must use virus and firewall on your virtual machine. Run Windows update to update XP and get the free MS Security essentials to make sure nothing sneaks onto your virtual machine. Think of it as a separate computer as it really is.
