Can you also post a pic of system properties ?

You can get to it by following this: start>right click my computer>click properties

This will tell us what cpu (processor) you have and how much memory you have.

If you can`t post a pic, you can just give us the above info, and the exact model of the pc.

To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's how:SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.

After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts.
Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.:)

Just to clarify the term "Upgrade". You can not do an upgrade directly from XP to Win 7. It has to be a Clean Install of Win 7 which requires that you install your programs again.

I dont know whats going on with this pc but I tried both options that you provided and I kept getting some kind of error box and I clicked continue and it pulled up the system info like you said but the majority of them were completely empty and the ones that were not would not let me post. This pc is a desktop Sony Vaio and all the hardware was last updated in 01 for some and 03 for the others if that helps at all.I have been looking into hardware updates and driver updates but it is all so confusing to me.I read that your hardware should be updated every 2 years and this stuff is ancient.Any suggestions?I don't understand why so many of my specs were completely empty? If there is anything else that I can give you info wise let me know and I will try my best to find it for you.I do know that the hardware drives for my cd-rom and my dvd-rom are both generic.Their info is CD-ROM-(HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8523BS), DVD-ROM (MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8588). I dont know if this helps at all or not. They were both last installed on 7/01/01. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you:confused:

I would just do a fresh install of XP on it, I wouldn`t even consider putting W7 on it. You also need to max out the memory. I will research it and see how much it can take.

You can start yourself by googleing your model to find the specs, to find out the max amount of memory that can be installed.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVRS312&LOC=3#/howtoTab

http://www.datamemorysystems.com/dms-memory/sony/vaio-pcv-rs312.htm

http://www.4allmemory.com/memory/sony-vaio-pcv-pcvrs312/

According to that, you can have 2 Gigs.

"Important" You need to see how many memory slots it has, 2 or 4.

It looks like you need 4 sticks of 512 MBs each.

Whataya know, I have 1 of these pc`s. ( not this exact model )I put 4 gigs in it, a P4 3.2 and XP runs better than W7. But then again that`s what is was designed to run.

Gotta step out to pic up a pizza.

512 MB of RAM is below the system requirements for Windows 7:
Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

RAM is upgradable however and the system can take 4 512 MB modules to go to 2 GB or 2 512 MB modules to go to 1 GB: Sony Vaio PCV-RS312 Desktop Memory Ram Upgrade :: Sony Vaio PCV-RS312 Ram Upgrade :: Offtek.co.uk, the Memory Superstore
Increasing RAM will increase the performance of the system.

Next unless you had added a graphics care the Video card is the Intel® 82845G/82865G and does not support aero:
Graphics — Running Windows 7* on older Intel graphics products

This machine may run Windows 7 32 bit at a push if the RAM is upgraded but won't run it very well. You are best to clean install Windows XP (and add more RAM) or buy a newer system.

Hi Melissalohrmann,

You will need a Ram upgrade thats for sure to at least 1GB to run Windows 7

For your machine Max memory is 2GB, so thats ok :)

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Additional requirements to use certain features:
  • Internet access (fees may apply)

PCs with multi-core processors:
Windows 7 was designed to work with today's multi-core processors. All 32-bit versions of Windows 7 can support up to 32 processor cores, while 64‑bit versions can support up to 256 processor cores.
PCs with multiple processors (CPUs):
Commercial servers, workstations, and other high-end PCs may have more than one physical processor. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors, providing the best performance on these computers. Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

Please read this Windows 7 upgrade info from Sony about your Model:

Sony eSupport - PCV-RS312

Personally and from years of experience on Sony Vaios I think its Viable to upgrade to Windows 7 on your model, but bear in mind you may get Driver issues, especially Graphics.

Sony software applications that originally shipped with the computer may not work after upgrade, but you can get them to work but its a nightmare.

Maybe natakuc4's and AddRam's advice is best if your not experienced on how to fix all the issues that may arise.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dave
