Hi NBAPwns13

If you do a windows easy transfer it will transfer all of your documents and videos, it however will not transfer programs, you will need to install them yourself.

No need for windows easy transfer, you can just copy & paste data from the Windows 7 partition to the Windows 8 partition.

May I suggest a third partition?
Put all your data, photos, documents, videos, whatever into a new partition where you store work items only. that way you have one centralized copy and changes made in one OS will appear in the other.

For some programs you may copy-paste them if they're portable, otherwise a full reinstall of them is better. For drivers, the only safe option is a normal install.

Location Tab

Alejandro85 is correct.

I use separate partitions for my Documents, Pictures, Music & Videos.

  1. Start in Windows 7
  2. Simply locate the Documents, Pictures, Music & Videos in your User folder
  3. Right click on them (one at a time)
  4. Choose "Properties"
  5. Select the "Location" tab
  6. Browse to the new location that you have chosen for your Documents, Pictures, Music & Videos folders
  7. Repeat as required
  8. Repeat the process in Windows 8

No, just create another partition and leave it without an OS, to make it data-only. It doesn't even needs to be a primary one, just a logical drive will do. It seems a good choice to me if you already have 2 partitions with two different OSs on each so they easily share the data.

This is absolutely the best and easiest solution to OP's question. Rep to Alejandro.

On a dualboot system it's just unnecessary usage of storage space to have personal files stored in two places. All my dual and triple boot systems are set up as Alejandro described. Own partitions for each operating system, in OP's case windows 7 & 8, then a data partition where all photos, videos, documents and so on are stored. Both operating systems can access this storage drive.

I am sorry if you think I use too strong language but using Easy Transfer on a dual boot system to create duplicate copies of each of your personal files and documents would be plain stupid and completely unnecessary.

Hi NBAPwns13

If you do a windows easy transfer it will transfer all of your documents and videos, it however will not transfer programs, you will need to install them yourself.

True, but unnecessary as mentioned above.

Not true.

Easy transfer transfers your personal documents, files and folders. It does not transfer device drivers, nor does it transfer installed programs.

OP needs to install all programs separately on both operating systems. Skype, Office, Photoshop, whatever. Also the device drivers must and need to be separately installed on both operating systems, they are absolutely not transferred with Easy Transfer.

No need for windows easy transfer, you can just copy & paste data from the Windows 7 partition to the Windows 8 partition.
If he\she is running two physical machines he\she will be unable to complete your suggestion, even if the user is running the one physical machine it makes for a messy drawn out job.
What a strange and inaccurate statement!

If OP had Seven and Eight on separate computers, copy & paste using an external HDD, USB stick or over the network would be a good solution. If you ask experienced geeks, half of them prefer this to Easy Transfer for Easy Transfer might not always work as intended, although I have to say I have never had any problems transferring user data with it.

In a single PC dual boot system copy & paste would be easiest and fastes way to transfer the user data, but as mentioned above it would be completely unnecessary waste of storage space.

Kari

You should ALWAYS have a partition to store your data and whatnot on. What happens when windows gets screwed up and you have to reinstall ???

Bye Bye Data ( And I don`t mean the Android ) ;)

@iroro Why would you think copy and pasting would been a long drawn out job ? You just open a window from 7 and a window from 8 and go to town. Faster and safer then any other way IMO and you copy exactly what you want to.

Drivers and programs will have to be installed on 8.

when you reinstall certain programs on 8 that you have set up a certain way in 7 like firefox for instance,
you can copy the firefox profile over and paste in in the firefox appdata roaming folder etc, other programs once installed in 8 can have skins folders or other plugins folders in program files copied over too, to save ages resetting things to the way you use them in 7

I use windows easy at least twice a day, you have the option to migrate drivers, we use this option ONLY when migrating to the same OS. We only do it to the same due to the folder structure.

If OP had Seven and Eight on separate computers, copy & paste using an external HDD, USB stick or over the network would be a good solution. It would only be a drawn out messy job depending on the users folder structure, that is all I meant by that statement, if the user knows where their stuff is go ahead but Easy Transfer does it all in one hit, thats all im saying.

Move FF Profile

when you reinstall certain programs on 8 that you have set up a certain way in 7 like firefox for instance,
you can copy the firefox profile over and paste in in the firefox appdata roaming folder etc, other programs once installed in 8 can have skins folders or other plugins folders in program files copied over too, to save ages resetting things to the way you use them in 7

You can configure Firefox in W7 AND Firefox in W8 to use the same profile (use a location on a non-OS partition).

You can copy your current Firefox profile to the new partition location.
Then you only need to edit the profiles.ini file (in W7 & W8) to point to the new location.
Move FF Profile.png
The yellow highlighted section shows a profile folder in the default location.
The green highlighted section shows a profile folder on another partition.

Note:

Pay attention to the "\" and "/" characters.

Alternatively you can start the Profile Manager (in W7 & W8) and create a new profile.
Type the following into the Start Menu search box (or Run box):
Firefox -P
During the procedure, you simply point your new profile to the folder you copied your old profile to.

Read the following tutorial for more info on the Profile Manager.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/208070-firefox-create-run-multiple-profiles.html

In step 5:
Use the "Choose Folder" button to select the folder you copied (instead of creating a new folder).
Remember to give your profile a new name. :)
