Notably, more than half of gamers who DO pick the embattled OS downgrade within weeks

...But the numbers are troubling. Despite Microsoft playing an interesting licensing sales game selling a deluge of licenses to OEMs at a rate that would indicate Windows 8 to be outselling Windows 7, the usage numbers indicate that OEMs are only moving a fraction of those licenses. Windows 8 is only drawing around a tenth of the internet traffic Windows 7 did at a similar point in the adoption cycle; in fact Windows 8 trails Windows Vista in internet traffic.

It seems Windows 7 is here to stay, wherever Microsoft want Windows 7 to stay or not, Windows 8's UI has become too touchscreen orientated, and I've even struggled to find files and programs Windows 8 due to the metro Start Menu.

I decided to stick with Windows 7 after trying out the Windows 8 preview version. If Microsoft had provided a conventional start menu along with the "metro" interface I might have considered upgrading, but I just didn't like Microsoft's we know what you should like attitude.

I know some people have been using a program called "Classic Shell" with Windows 8, in order to gain back the conventional Start Menu, but would you want to install a third-party program for a Start Menu?

I like many read a lot about Windows 7 and Windows 8 but I need some help here to understand.
1. Was the Start Menu removed to repair some sort of problem with the operating system?
2. What was the problem?
3. Does Microsoft give some sort of reason why the Start Menu is a bad thing.
The only thing I can think of is the Start Menu doesn't have that Toys R Us look.

1. No. The Start Menu was merely removed because Windows 8 was written to be compatible with touch screens and tablet computers, and move away from traditional desktop PC's.

2. There's no problem with the Start Menu/Button per se, it's more the move to tablets/touch screens, as I said in #1.

3. See this article: Why Were the Start Button & Start Menu Removed in Windows 8?

well, Start menu could have used a redesign, but something like that isn't the right direction for a desktop.

Live Ads

One of the real reasons was so that you would constantly have to go to the Metro screen and thus be exposed to the deluge of Live Tile ads that will soon be appearing (if W8 is successful).

When MS found out that people were using a Registry hack to restore the Start Menu (in W8 DP) they DELIBERATELY stripped the code out of the subsequent versions.

There is no reason that MS couldn't have achieved their so-called unified UI experience without removing the Start button (and replacing it with an invisible hotspot).

You're welcome, Layback Bear, and basically, yeah. They figure they've got the desktop user by the ba**s(theoretically speaking), and so they can do what they want with the operating system, and don't give a damn what the customer wants, like you said. You would think after the flops that were Millennium Edition and Vista, Microsoft would learn to listen to the customer more...but, I guess not. :)

To be fair, Windows ME and Vista were still usable depending on the situation, but Windows 8 meanwhile is a completely different animal from ME/Vista as far as "this crap stinks" goes.

And besides, the lack of a start menu is arguably the smaller issue in severity when you take a look at the closed platform being pushed forward by Metro and Windows Store. Apple App Store anyone?

EDIT: Windows h8. Catchy!

I have replaced Windows 7 with Windows 8 on my netbook simply because it was faster at loading up/shutting down. Now I'm just very annoyed that my resoultion is too small to start anything from the start screen and I have to go to the desktop to start anything, if there's no icon on the desktop, gotta go into program files to find a shortcut.
I might be putting Linux on it soon.

That's an interesting point of view.

Anyway I'm running Windows 8 in VMware and thus far I can't say I'm impressed. Like everyone else, the missing start menu is a big negative for a desktop. I'm also not interested in an app store laden OS. On the other hand I suppose if I had a tablet, I might like it.

At this point in time I'm not sure who's going to give first: Consumers who finally buy into 8, or Microsoft who finally realize 8 isn't what consumers want on a desktop. Time, and sales, will tell.

As Apple teaches, looks and ease of use are everything if you want to sell. Win8 is the contrary of that on a desktop.

Hi there

Here you are -- W8 start screen -- to get into the desktop you click the bottom left tile which gives you the identical desktop to W7 but without the ORB or start menu.

It's not too hideous once you get used to it although for some applications it's a bit of a pain.

A lot of people do actually like it -- don't believe half the stats you read on web pages --often people have an ulterior motive for posting stuff down and "rubbishing" other products.

W8 licenses are handled differently -- also with W8 phones coming on stream just now --and the licensing of W8 is different for these devices the "Take up stats" of W8 are rather meaningless - also fewer people need to buy new PC's and W8 tablets haven't yet hit the market big time yet --we shall see what Samsung, HP envy, Lenovo all bring plus of course Ms itself with the surface pro.

Too many people read stuff on the Internet and assume it's 100% Gospel Truth -- Statistics of ANY sort need to be analyzed carefully -- and also understand HOW the data was collected and how relevant it is to the point trying to be made.

Cheers
jimbo

Well Jimbo I must tell you I belive what you are saying pretty much to a Degree because I turned my Android into a W8 Interface and to me it is actually pretty cool for the most part and I have options to even Manipulate the color tiles and background

I also have the interface you show above as well sorry if they are kinda blurry

Actually, vista's fail is that it is very slow and sluggish compared to xp or 7. windows 8 fail is only touchscreen ui, it's not like a thing that ms couldn't fix very fast. Plus windows 7 is not worse in any aspect compared to win8, and is better in few aspects, so it's only natural, that smart people stay with 7, and for simple people there is no need for anything, they just stay with xp :)

Maybe they didn't want to alter the old adage: "Windows systems are like Star Trek Movies...every other one is bad.":p

Seriously though, you have to wonder, why not offer a desktop version & a touchpad version? Would it have been that hard to do that?

Yeah... money. However I do agree with you.

Anyway to be honest, we know people will complain about anything so that's nothing new. However when I see PC enthusiasts like me, uninspired by the "new" OS. I think that's saying a lot. As I've said before, 8 is the only OS I've failed to beta test or even have on one Pc on release day. And I've been playing with Windows since Windows 95's release.

That said, I do have a copy I'm running through WMware right now, and will probably purchase a copy at the 39.99 price (my copy I have now is offered through my school). Do I want to pay 179 for a copy no! And this is coming from a person who paid 219 for 7 Ultimate.

Like I said, time will tell where the OS sits or finishes up, but I'm not betting on 8.
