I wonder what market research Microsoft did, when deciding wherever to release Windows 8 for desktops, with a similar or exact configuration as a tablet?

I wonder what market research Microsoft did, when deciding wherever to release Windows 8 for desktops, with a similar or exact configuration as a tablet?

Well let's not forget Microsoft did fire Steven Sinofsky after the launch of 8 so... Will Microsoft restore Start Menu to Windows 8?

Seems he obviously failed to do any market research seeing how the biggest gripe is the missing start menu button.

Sigh. These guys are call-center grade drones. Underpayed and sent to "harass" people in supermarkets trying to sell them stuff on behalf of another company.
Sky, all mobile telecommunication companies, quite a few banks, and assorted lesser companies employ them here in all major shopping malls.

I just got /8 upgrade before they raise the price the end of the month. But I run it in a virtual partition. Will probably never use it for real work. It is just to keep up-to-date and being able to talk to the boys and girls on the eightforum.

Yeah I got a free copy of Pro from my school that I'm running in VM as well. I'm also planning on purchasing a copy as well before they raise the prices. Hmmm... that would be two legit copies for the low price of $39.99.

I don't see that as a waste should I never run the OS :)

I always love it when Microsoft advertise Windows 8 on television, and everyone seems to be so happy to have a Windows 8 OS, when in reality everyone is installing a Start Menu program or installing Windows 7.

Hi there

Well you ARE on the W7 Forum so I' would expect this type of reaction to be fairly typical from W7 users.

On the W8 Forum reactions are a bit different both positive and negative - but most of the negatives are from people who previously used W7. New Windows users don't seem to mind W8 at all.

Actually the new GUI makes a LOT of sense on mobile devices / tablets especially with touch screens -- but for classical desktop applications then it's a bit different.

However I'm sure even the most BIASED W7 user has to agree that touch is pretty terrible in W7 and as for those horrible W7 based windows phones - well even those old handsets look like they came from another long bygone era -- people would almost OFFER to GIVE you a new handset if they saw you with one of those decidedly uncool "clunkers".

The new W8 phones are very good indeed and getting a lot of positive reviews, the W8 tablets are fine too - and people can't wait to see what the new Ms Surface pro will do when it finally appears --by all accounts should be an Ipad killer.

I have to admit I hated the W8 interface at first but on a small light thin ultra book type of laptop with a touch screen it makes a lot of sense.

I don't have too much trouble getting into the desktop --difficulties are grossly exaggerated.

I don't like it though at work (fortunately we are still going from XP ==> W7 so no danger of W8 at work) where there are quite complicated applications with a load of sub options where both a classical desktop menu is needed and also I use the command line a lot to get into servers etc.

So don't write off W8 just yet --you might be surprised -- Ms though will have to address the desktop issue at some point for corporate / work users or they will eventually lose that very lucrative market.

Cheers
jimbo

But isn't that the heart of the issue? Whether a corporate / work user or a user who works from home, desktop users seem to prefer a traditional desktop interface.

W8 though is a different animal entirely --it has to handle things like smart phones and tablets which rely heavily on touch screens and don't need windowed apps or multi - monitors so Ms was in a bit of a hardplace here -- press on with a load of different OS'es or try and make a common interface so a user would have roughly the same experience whether they are using a phone, a tablet or a computer --and in fact the W8 interface isn't a lot different from Android either so anybody using Windows for the FIRST TIME who has also used any sort of smart phone would be quite familiar with the interface.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, maybe that's the big problem - microsoft is trying to mix too many things in one os, and they just cant do perfect os for tablets, phones and desktop computers in time, so they focused more on touchscreen devices - it's like vista and 7, vista is sluggish and slow even on todays computers, and 7 is fast, responsive, and improved overall. Just try to mix every food product from your fridge and try it :D So, next windows version will show, if microsoft is trying to do a great all in one os, or they are just trying to shut down their bussiness :) I'm not sure, if sacrificing their desktop/laptop market's monopoly for mobile devices market is worth it. I mean, they should just wait, "mobile" devices are getting biger every year, so after few years mobile phones will just transform into laptops.

Yikes!! Great analogy startas! LOL
W8 was optimised for a touch screen/fingerpainting interface. Thats ok on a phone or tablet, but with a desktop is like putting brown gravy on your cottage cheese and green olives.

Smart phones and tablets are the big rage, but there is still the segment that uses desktop/laptop computers and still needs a more conventional desktop. Not everyone is primarily into social media, videos, music, games, etc. There are those that use their computers for business productivity. Business' finally bought into Win 7, from XP, and started upgrading systems, software and training. They are not going to do another major $$ investment again this quick into the Win 8 arena.

I would guess that the majority of the installed PCs are used for business. And you guys are right, these will not move to /8 - why should they. M$ has to come with something fast or they will lose their most lukrative market.

I doubt that there is a lot of money to be made with tablets in the long run. Prices really plunge and you can already get a reasonable Android tablet for less than $70 - Like this one - comes in other colors too.

You guys forget that Windows 8 is made for the more moronic part of the population. If you are intelligent, you are not being targetted. They want the money from the masses.

Money from the masses is exactly the point. Microsoft is wishing those masses are jumping over from Apple. Microsoft wants that bite of of the Apple logo to become bigger. Microsoft will digest the bigger bit out of the Apple with love and care.
