This OCZ Vector is definitely on my shopping list. Just waiting for a Newegg sale. My 60GB M4 is getting a little tight now that I have also Windows 8 running on it in virtual.

Or, depending on country of residence, get a Amazon Rewards Visa and rack up Amazon points. When I bought the Vector I had 9323 points or $93.23 USD so my Vector came out to be about ~$199 (orig. $269.99+tax). I put everything on the card, daily expenses, business expenses, etc so the points rack up pretty fast, especially if you make purchases on Amazon.

No, it can be the same as W7 with the MBR system, which uses the old style BIOS.

W7 and Windows 8 can use the GPT system, which must use the new UEFI, if I'm not mistaken.

I think I now have proof that the file transfer rate is pretty irrelevant for the OS performance on a SSD and that all the performance boost comes from the fast access time.

Here is the setup that gave me the clue:

1. I installed Windows 8 in VMware running on my desktop M4 SSD
2. Then I copied the VMware folder to a USB attached Mushkin 60GB SSD
3. I ran Windows 8 off the Mushkin attached via USB3
4. The I ran Windows 8 on the Mushkin via USB2

These are my findings:

a) there seems to be absolutely no performance difference whether I ran on USB3 or USB2 or from the internal M4 SSD

b) what was really surprising was that the boot time (as to Event100 in Event Viewer) was always around 35 sec from the internal M4, but it is 25 sec from the USB3 AND USB2 ports

c) there are a few adjustments that the system and VMware seem to make when you move the VMware folder around. The system made adjustments the first time it detected the moved folder. That was automatic and was only the first time.

VMware seems to make adjustments when you do the first shutdown from the external disk. The Windows 8 shutdown itself was 3 sec (Event 200) but VMware took a couple of minutes to shut everything down - both when I first attached to USB3 and then again on USB2. But that is also only on the first shutdown.

Conclusion: Regardsless whether you attach the SSD on a 5Gb, 6Gb or 480Mb channel, the performance is the same. The transfer speed does not seem to matter.

Installing the OS with VMware on an external SSD is a nice and very flexible option.

4k is not these drives strong point. Not that I can notice.

Nice! Almost 27 MB/s on 4K read is as fast as just about any new drive out. Is it repeatable? What kind of sorcery is that?

I dunno really, never got that high before. I'll run it again tomorrow and post it here. I have allowed it to sit with power only, no data cable per Crucial's advice for garbage collection.

Sure, I don't know if the settings are what you have, and I don't really understand what they are/do. Seems ATTO has the speeds reversed from AS-SSD

In the left snip I had let a Linux distro run from USB so no data was written to the SSD.

Hi guys, I'm having a discussion over at DP Review here: Any tips for speeding up Lightroom4 with D800 NEF's

Anyway the OP is asking for ways to speed up Adobe Lightroom as he has it installed on an SSD drive. Automatically people have chimed in to blame the SSD drive. Decrying it has degraded over time… even though the OP never said how old or what kind of drive it was.

Also someone brought up the wear and tear of the drive because of scratch file usage, but I find that to be a bit of a stretch. I know we’ve had that discussion as well but I think it was generally agreed that it was much to do about nothing. It "may" have had an effect on first gen drives, but that was then, this is now.

Anyway what I was looking for but can’t find was the test or experiment showing how long an SSD drive could go before it wore out.
