I do believe it will also be designed to catch hacked downloads from torrents.
That is how most of the illegal programs,movies,books,music ect. get passed around the world. I don't think they are worried about you making a copy of a movie as much as they are worried about a 1000 copies of the movie being passed around the world every hour.

While not advocating Piracy I'd like to know what possible business is it of Microsoft to check whether I'm downloading Movie torrents -- it's up to the Police (where appropriate) and the COPYRIGHT HOLDERS.

Similarly if I drive a BMW dangerously it's not up to BMW to monitor this but the appropriate competent legal authority / authorities --Highway patrol, local Police, municipal police -if you have them --etc.

No where in my post did I say or indicate it was Microsoft's right or duty to monitor torrents..
I did absolutely indicate that I don't believe they will leave torrents out of the game plan because it is way most of the above mentioned things get stolen using torrents. I can't remember a time 1000 plus song CD/DVD were stolen from Walmart. Walmart has got people and security equipment to watch for such things.
Now the people who's products via the internet and torrents are being stolen have got their own cop on the block to watch. Microsoft help business, law enforcement and countries to catch and shut down botnets, credit card thief's, internet bank robbers and so on and no body complains about privacy. Well except the robbers they probably complain. If their wasn't so much thievery going on using the internet their would be no need for the big cop on watch. We are talking about billions of dollars every year. Why would anybody think that would go on for ever without anybody trying to figure out a way to stop most of it. So we can thank the people involved for the stealing over the internet for bring this to a head and laying in our laps.

It seems Windows 7 is here to stay, wherever Microsoft want Windows 7 to stay or not, Windows 8's UI has become too touchscreen orientated, and I've even struggled to find files and programs Windows 8 due to the metro Start Menu.

I would agree with you too. I personally think that if I install Windows 8 on my non-touchscreen computer I would have to go through stress because my mouse breaks every 10 minutes and this would make it worse.

I tried a preview at Best Buy and disliked it. I like all the stuff I put onto my Windows 7 PC like ObjectBar, a Windows Start button I created, and the login screen I made. I don't think as of now Windows 8 is not much "customizable".

Yes of course you are right.

MS are not doing this to make less money - they are doing it to make more. That money comes from somewhwere - guess where.

You are also correct the barriers to entry are enormous. It is not a level playing field by any stretch of the imagination.

Stevie B is doing a good job for MS keeping it that way. That is what he is supposed to do - it is his job. It is not good for anybody else.

While I'm sure Google Chrome OS caters to a specific need that some of us might have, I'm personally not at all fond of software, let alone an entire OS, that relies completely on the cloud for its software and functionality. Relying on the cloud has a single point of failure in the internet connection, and I worry for the security and privacy of any data that would be on the cloud.

Cisco tried to pull a similar "we monitor your data traffic and brick your router at our discretion" bullshit last year with their new "cloud" routers. Not sure if anyone remembers, but if I recall correctly, that brew up such a huge shitstorm all over the internet that Cisco was forced to amend their privacy policies and firmware appropriately.

I remember.

Haven't even taken a glance at any Cisco hardware since, my trust in them instantly gone since that incident, and if MS decides they really do want to spy at my personal matters in Windows 8 and future versions of Windows then I guess I'll stick with Windows 7/XP for my Win32 needs and seriously consider alternatives like Linux and BSD for the long-term future.

King, I still haven't updated my router and won't as long as it works. The same goes for windows and windows 8 and yes I am looking at the available Linux options. Depending on what path MS chooses Linux options may get a real boost.

Install VMware Player (or similar software) and try Linux Mint 14.

I've just replaced Ubuntu 10 (64 bit) with Linux Mint 14 (MATE) (64 bit) and IMO it's quite nice.

My Linux Mint 14 (MATE) install ran my Radeon HD6450, my onboard sound card and onboard network out of the box.
It even installed my personal Ubuntu theme without drama.

Some people like Linux Mint 14 (Cinnamon) but like most Linux Distros, you can choose other desktop environments.

So we can thank the people involved for the stealing over the internet for bring this to a head and laying in our laps.

I think that is just a convenient excuse, used by Corporations and Governments, to justify monitoring.

Politicians can't help themselves, Governments have always wanted to spy on the populous (and more recently Corporations).

There's always some reason why we have to be supervised by "Our Masters":

• "We have to spy on everyone, because you are all IP Pirates."
• "We have to spy on everyone, because you are all Terrorists."
• "We have to spy on everyone, because you are all Paedophiles."
• "We have to spy on everyone, because you don't vote for my political party."

"Resistance is Futile......You Will Comply ......You Will be absorbed"...... SevenOfNine a few years ago in Star trek Voyager so the idea is nothing new.

There are ways to avoid though -- but the weak link is that most people have to go through an ISP to get to the internet -- so unless you have a direct satellite connection and maintain your own Internet connection (hideously expensive but theoretically do-able) you could still be controlled via the ISP -- decent encryption is probably the only way to avoid this however and some sort of URL masking so the ISP can't log the sites you've visited.

DRM is a desperately flawed business model these days -- it can even INHIBIT business -- for example if I want to buy an e-book from Kindle (Amazon) - but eventually want to read it on a SONY PRS e-reader or even a NOOK why should I be prevented from doing so -- after all If I buy a physical book it doesn't have a restriction for example that I can't read it in bed but can when I'm sitting on the bog. So the DRM could in fact LIMIT the consumers choice of where they get their books / music etc. from.

(The device might also break / get lost / stolen etc etc -- so you might buy a better value product to replace your old one -- so should your entire library now become useless).

Things like Calibre fortunately convert one format to another and removing DRM from e-books is simplicity itself -- but if you DON'T know how to do this (and I'm not saying here how to do it BTW) then your entire e-book buying range will be restricted to the particular store that the device is "tethered to" -- apart from Sony who use the fairly open standard EPUB.

I have always thought this , kindles don't last much over a couple of years and the idea of having to constantly replace our libraries whether it be books or music every couple of years is completely infeasible I mean who has the money to do that? DRM just punishes people who buy the content legally and don't pirate it.
It seems we are losing more and more privacy under the illusion it's in our benifit and by giving up our rights to privacy company's can provide us with a better service well that's what they tell us anyway . If we actually saw all information all these company's had on us we proberly would die of shock and never go on-line again. This Microsoft patent to me anyway seems very worrying indeed I already feel like I live in a glass bowl so much so I've started disconnecting from the internet unless I'm actually doing something on-line because so much software does already 'phone home' and I'm not quite sure why some of it does?

Windows 8

For many, myself included, Windows 8 isn’t even Windows. Windows 8 took everything we liked about Windows and kicked it in the gut. I understand the purpose is to be a cross-platform OS, but the execution is just… bad. I actually enjoy the “Metro” UI, so it’s not that they changed what I was looking at… they changed how I do things, and not for the better this time.

My point in quoting the article was that Microsoft is treating the PC with less importance with Windows 8. Because they are so worried that they have fallen behind in tablet and smartphone sales they have put a tablet / smartphone interface on Windows 8 desktop. Instead of treating the PC a a separate entity that should have an interface designed for office productivity Microsoft decided to have a touchscreen interface which is not anywhere near as useful as the Windows 7 interface.

Windows 8 desktop is as useful as W7 desktop, the start menu issue is not a problem for many people.
As with every new OS, there are a couple new/different things but, once you learn them, it's all easy.
Just my opinion, I'm using 8 mainly and still have 7 in dual boot.

Just use the OS you like and feel comfortable with, it's not a bad/good situation, just preference.
