I just installed a Samsung 840Pro 128GB SSD on an older PC and Macrium gave me this error when I attempted to perform the basic Windows (sys reserved + OS) image.
Backup aborted - Failed to create Volume snapshot Result code 0x8000ffff
When I ran the imaging a 2nd time it went ok

It's like being let down by an old friend. Volume Shadow Copy service set to manual like it always has been.
I 'm running the latest version of free Macrium. Has anyone come across this type of error?

I had the same error just once when backing up a HDD spinner, as with Michael 2nd try was fine. IT could be the VSS service did not start fast enough since it was set to manual. Just guessing.

I am a new member and my knowledge is limited. However I have recently started using a new (partly new) desktop with WIN 7. I have followed advice from this forum and used free Macrium 5.1 and practiced making a little test image and then restoring it onto a test partition as suggested by whs. I have also made a Windows PE Macrium disk, and I downloaded the 1.7GB WAIK My computer is working perfectly, as far as I know, but I would like to have confidence in my bootable recovery disk, and would like to test it but do not want to mess up my desktop. I have another desktop that has a serviceable WINXP OS in it, but I don't want to mess that up either! I have a small friendly computer shop nearby. Perhaps I should ask them to test my disk. On further thinking I have the official MS setup disk as used by the professional who set up my computer so that must work. If I had some sort of complete failure so that the computer would not run at all could I just boot from my WIN 7 install disk then when the bare minimum OS was available use a recent image of the OS to restore back to full working condition? Any helpful comments appreciated

If you tested your WinPE CD with the little test partition, then the CD is OK. That's how I do it. And in any case, should you have any problems, you can download the latest WinPE .iso from my Skydrive site and burn another WinPE CD.

Thanks. Yes of course the WIN PE CD is not uniquely mine. I could just make another, as I have laptops, but I haven't tested it. The test I did was to use the Macrium program on my computer (on C Drive) to make an image of some data on a test partition on the data drive. The image was saved on my backup drive. The test partition was wiped clean then restored successfully, as you suggested I am sure. But I haven't tested the Rescue DVD. In the years I used WIN XP I used the Windows backup facility several times, successfully, but the equivalent on WIN 7 gave me trouble and no confidence so I am new to images Macrium and apart from my test have never used them. If my computer software became completely scrambled and would not start what is the first thing to do? Should I put in my WIN PE CD and hope it works or just wearily get out the WIN 7 install disk? Being a virgin in these matters I don't know what happens when you put in a bootable disk such as the rescue disk or Install disk. Will it politely ask me what I want to do or will it just empty (format) C drive and start creating a new setup from scratch?

I have looked carefully at the beginning of that YouTube video. So that is what you should see if your OS was not functioning and you booted from the WinPE disk? That is re-assuring, but suppose I put the recovery disk in my fully functioning computer now and restarted it. Could I run the program until it got to Restore Summary and then click on Cancel rather than Finish and not have made any changes. I am sorry if this is obvious to everyone except me! If I could test the disk in that way it would give a more comfortable feeling

Yes you can. It will make no changes until you press Finish.

It works for both.

So you mean it's the 32bits winpe version. 64bits version doesn't work on 32bits cpu's (of course)

I think it is 64bit which means it needs a 64bit capable PC, not necessarily with 64bit Windows installed.

Make sure you follow Kado's tutorial (thank you Keith for helping out) and select only the little test partition for restore. Then nothing will happen to the other partitions. The operation with the WinPE is exactly the same as with the installed Macrium.

How about if you load up a 32bit version. I don't use 32bit. A 32bit only system must be a very old PC. To my recollection, all systems since at least 2007 are 64bit capable. And since the CD is an independent system, it will run on those. Has nothing to do with the OS version they installed.

I disagree.
The OCZ forum supply a LINUX and also a Windows based Toolbox to Secure Erase their SSD.
Their Windows version is 32 bit, and on a 64 bit Windows System it has no access to System32.
All it wants and needs is in SysWOW64.
I found out the hard way after their toolbox failed to launch under 64 bit WinPE because that has no SysWOW64.
I had Macrium use WAIK to create the 32 bit WinPE,
and this did launch the OCZ Windows ToolBox

In my experience there are for more 32-bit-only portable tools than 32-Bit-or-64-bit,
and I have found a portable-screen-shot tool that would run under 32 bit WinPE.

When I moved up from 32 bit XP on a Laptop to 64 bit Win 7 on a Desktop,
I found that the old 32 bit WinPE Boot CD was just as fast and efective as the latest 64 bit WinPE Boot CD.

A 64 bit system gets no benefit from a 64 bit WinPE, and it loses flexibility on what portable tools you can run under 32 bit WinPE
