Solved Image your system with free Macrium

Thanks Derek, that should end the discussion. I provided my Skydrive upload as a service so that people would not sit there for more than 2 hours to produce the WinPE. But I am not going to go out of my way to provide a whole program library.

I do not understand the whole discussion anyhow. WinPE has an independent Mini Windows7 OS and has nothing to do with the OS you are running. When you load from the CD, it is the same.

It's only old hardware that may not work with it. You should always test it on your own system anyhow.

LF, thank you. I just don't want to become a software distribution center. The production of the isos is not the problem - it is the uploading. That blocks my internet for quite a while. And then I have to upload a new one every time Macrium decides to issue a new release. Not that the older versions would not work in most cases (UEFI support was different), but some people always ask for the newest version.

I have now booted with my Macrium WINPE recovery disk and tested it as discussed. Nobody will be surprised that everything worked as it should, but it now gives me much more confidence to know that if necessary I can recover back to normal quite easily. This forum has been very helpful. You are appreciated!

Don't worry. I have recovered at least 50 times with WinPE. I used to teach Macrium classes and in class we did that all the time - with test partitions. It has NEVER failed. But even full system recoveries have always worked. I muck up my system quite often and then the WinPE comes to the rescue.

If you get problems, it is usually a use error. A typical error is to forget to image the 100MB system partitions and then move to another disk without it. Then you have no bootmgr.

To make it all work though one must make images on a regular basis. ;)

Question, since I have Users on a separate physical drive, is there a way to use Macrium to image both the OS and data and be able to restore to two drives?

Sure, just check the 2 partitions when you image and the same when you restore. You can also image and restore them independently. That's what I do with my systems and data partitions because they need not be imaged at the same time. The change activity is different.

Hello, I am new here, and I am glad to meet you. I discovered recently Macrium product and I'd like to understand it more. I have 2 PC, both with XP, and now I want to migrate one to Win7, but before this, I am playing a little with macrium on xp too, to see if I can use it here or only in win7. So I backed up the system partition from C, I created a rescue CD based on linux, and after these I formated C partition and restarted my PC. After booted from rescue CD, I located the image created before,choose the partition, and next asked me to choose target disk,but here is empty so I cannot continue.Where I was wrong? How to proceed? Many thanks in advanced

Not a good thing to format C before you know it works! You could restore it over an already filled C so overwriting it.

So you booted form linux macrium recovery CD. You can browse and select the image. You select the partition(s) in the image you want to restore succesfully. correct?

v5: How to recover your PC using the Linux Rescue CD
where do you get stuck?
==================
also important:
Target disk selection

You are presented with a list of disks attached to your system, excluding the one containing the image file. Select the disk you wish to restore your image to. If the source image file resides on a locally attached disk, this disk will be omitted from the list.

Note that any partitions existing on this disk that overlap the partition(s) you are restoring will be lost.
========
Form linux macrium rescue you can only restore to exact same spot on disk and leave partition same size or larger as at time of backup. (cannot shrink on restore)

The winpe rescue disk is more flexibel. You can restore to any spot on disk and shrink partition during restore.

Is the image located on another physical disk as where C was?=> this is impossible to restore with linux version

The Linux Rescue CD cannot recognize your internal hard disk(s) therefore you cannot select any destination partition(s) to overwrite.
This is possibly because you are using an unrecognized SATA mode. Go to your BIOS settings for your main hard disk controller and check for an option like ‘Compatibility’, IDE or legacy mode. Try this restore again. After succesfull restore... just before reboot to windows change sata settings back in BIOS

Thx for answer.I know about WINPE, but for demo version is not available, so I cannot evaluate fully before to buy it.I don't understand how can anybody sell a product without giving the posibility to testing fully, to prove if it really works . So, I try to find another product.I have to start again with another product after one day of study.What do you recommend me?I need one with all the function in demo and to can repair disaster of the system through a CD rescue. Many thanks

Right

"v5: How to recover your PC using the Linux Rescue CD"
I read it and prooceded to it.

"where do you get stuck?"

I stuck at "target selection disk", because I have no option the choose there.Is empty. ==================
"also important:

Is the same but no target disk selection options

"The winpe rescue disk is more flexibel. You can restore to any spot on disk and shrink partition during restore.[/QUOTE]"
Ye I know but is not free or in demo version.I'd rather to test first and then to buy it.
