Have a laptop and a Virgin superhub in the same room within 4 ft.of each other and run wireless. My question is once the laptop is booted, which takes about 30 seconds, how long should it take before connection to the internet is made.

Generally speaking, the connection should be a second or two at most.

That is what I would expect but the time it takes after the laptop has booted is between 20 to 30 seconds more.Could your expertise give me some guidance as to what could be at fault, computer or superhub?.Once connection has been made to the internet everything is fine. Before I was stupid enough to pay £20 to Virgin for this so called superhub, which is a combined modem and router,I had the old netgear modem and seperate router and internet connection was there as soon as the laptop was booted.

OK. That implies that its to do with this Virgin SuperHub.

Unfortunately I have no experience with that, but I can get some UK-based members too see if they can help - I'll request some help now.

Hi I understand your issues with the SuperHub. I have previously expressed my opinion on another thread, please see the post below:

For those that don't know it is a modem and router in one. The main issues are poor signal and poor wireless speed, everything that is important of a router!

Other issues include faulty PSU that have a humming noise. The router is made by Netgear but contain Virgin Media's logo on with a fairly big blue light.

The router is often referred to as the SH (SuperHub) or more funny names like SuperDud or SuperSlug.

Even a Virgin technician said to me "Virgin know the SH is rubbish, why do you think they added modem mode to the latest firmware?"

Several users have said they are part of a trial on various forums for testing the SH2 but Virgin have said there is no such thing as a SH2, it is a rumour.

If you ever see people with problems regarding a SuperHub and their broadband then you are probably best of telling them to get a new router and put the SH in modem mode. If you want Virgin Media broadband you HAVE to use the SH as a modem or as a modem + router.

Source: Virgin Media customer with a SuperHub router. It's not just my opinion but reviews on various websites including Virgin Media's very own forum

The latest firmware version is V2.37.01

How do I check?
Type http://192.168.0.1 into your browser

Default username = admin
Default password = changeme

If you have changed your login details before obviously enter your new details into http://192.168.0.1

Once you are logged in click SuperHub settings and scroll down to until you see "Software Version"

If it says V2.37.01 then your router has the up-to-date firmware version.

If not?
Turn your router off by the mains for 5 minutes and then turn it back on. This should push the firmware version to your SuperHub. If it doesn't then I recommend going onto the Virgin Media forum as suggested above but asking for help regarding your firmware version. I believe Virgin Media staff on there can send a signal so to speak and push out a firmware version to your SuperHub, I may be wrong on that part though. However I know for a fact they can check to see if there are certain problems with your internet connection i.e. high power levels of which would affect your wireless signal + speed.

The answer to your question is what Golden has already said.

I suggest that you do this on Windows 7:

  1. Click the start button
  2. In the search bar (type services.msc)
  3. Open services.msc
  4. Scroll down until you see WLAN AutoConfig and change the startup type to "Automatic" by double clicking on WLAN AutoConfig and changing the properties there
  5. After applying the new setting, restart your laptop and let us know if the problem has been solved or not

Also as a Virgin Media customer myself I suggest you invest in a decent router and put the SuperHub in Modem Mode and connect a new router to your SuperHub as then you should have good Wi-Fi, providing you buy a decent router obviously :)

Let us know how you get on, I feel your pain with the SuperHub.

Thank you Mangoh for your comprehensive reply and would confirm the firmare is the latest and my laptop is configured for wlan autoconfig.Have sent a lengthy letter of complaint to Swansea and now await their reply.Probably should not ask you the next question but feel free to tell me to get lost but is there any good combined modem and router out there and if so which are they?.If the reply is in the negative and to receive good wireless a seperate modem and router are required then is there any model you would recommend without having to remortgage the house.

I've been recommending the Belkin ones for a while - I have one here which is a pure router which has accepted everything I've thrown at it, and one elsewhere (the pub :) ) which again usually accepts everything thrown at it, despite being between a bottle-fridge and the till.

https://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=478067 is the one I have - the pub's is the (now obsolete) modem/router that looks identical.

Compare Belkin Routers will give you an idea of the modern options since mine are now offline.

ASUS RT-N66U router. Some of the reviews state specifically that it goes well with the SH but you may need to remortgage your house :D. I'm awaiting my cousins reply as he said he can get full signal and good speed with his router (different to the ASUS I recommend above)... again with Virgin and using the SH as a modem.

Still awaiting the text so I will let you know when he tells me the make and model. I think it is cheaper than the ASUS RT-N66U.

Other people may have cheaper suggestions within your price range.

Regarding the initial problem we need to establish whether it is the SH to blame or your laptop.

Please do the following (hoping you have a phone with Wi-Fi here):
In the same room as the router try to connect to Wi-Fi using your laptop
In the same room as the router try to connect to Wi-Fi using your phone

Does it still take ages to connect to Wi-Fi on your phone?

What is the make and model of your laptop?

Have you installed the latest wireless drivers for it?

My other question is does the problem occur on all your devices i.e. phones, laptop, computers or is it just on one laptop?

We can rule out the firmware version now.

I strongly recommend you try the following as it recently solved my issue of the Wi-Fi icon taking ages to load on my laptop:
Ensure all the services.msc on your laptop matches the services.msc on this link. Pay attention to manual, automatic and especially the services.msc from this link I provided that state "automatic delayed start". Make sure all your services.msc match the link I provided, to speed up the process look at the link on your mobile phone if possible and make the changes on your laptop, saves you having to switch windows all the time. However after manually resetting your services.msc to the default values still make sure WLAN AutoConfig is still set to automatic.

Unable to open the private mail you sent me as I don't know how. Will try going through that extensive list you gave me when I have time later today and will let you know if it helps. You also suggest it could be my laptop yet I have checked my network adaptor drivers for Atheros AR5007EG network adaptor,Wi Fi mini port adaptor and Realtek family controller and they are all fine.Is there anything else it could be in the laptop?.

At Sevenforums we don't give up until the OP does :p

Have you tried changing the SSID? (the name used when you connect to the internet)

If you look at the answer to this question other people have had problems with the Atheros AR5007EG network adaptor

To change the SSID
Type http://192.168.0.1 into your browser

Default username = admin
Default password = changeme

If you have changed your login details before obviously enter your new details into http://192.168.0.1

Once you are logged in look for SSID and rename it to a 10 character name or less with no spaces.

Restart the Superhub and your laptop and let us know how you get on.

Also if that doesn't work can you tell me if you are upgraded your OS recently and did you experience this problem before you had the SuperHub router installed?

Chsnged the SSID from a 18 character to a 8 character but unableto see any improvement.Only had this problem since the SH was installed.Have not upgraded ar changed any systems.Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit service pack 1.When I had the netgear modem and router which was given me on joining Virgin internet connection was instantaneous.Problem started when SH was purchased from Virgin.

Do you not have another router anymore?

The SH is the only router I have.I omitted to give you answers to some of your earlier questions so here they are:-my laptop is a Toshiba model Satellite Pro L300-1FK and I have no phone wi-fi.The Virgin broadband comes in by cable.

Goto the advanced settings under the 3 boxes and then to the wireless radio config.
Change the following settings.
Wireless Speed set to 145mb
Wirelss security is best set to WPA2-AES (you can also change the password for wifi here to something easy for you to remember)
Select a channel (Not Auto) Download inSSIDer and scan first and use the least used channel.
Greenfield mode off and OBSS should be off anyway.

Basically from researching into the issue it sounds like your wireless driver is conflicting with the SuperHub so technically speaking it is both the laptop and the SuperHub's fault. The wireless driver you have does seem to have a lot of connection issues from the posts I have read on the internet.

Please also install the up-to-date driver from here. CTRL F + AR5007EG to save you having to look through the entire list.

Finally do Window updates. Same applies for Windows 7, check for updates.

Let me know how you get on.

I really don't know then :(

Only other thing I can think of is to uninstall the drivers via device manager, restart and then reinstall the drivers (previously I said to install the drivers again so I'm unsure if you uninstalled them first)

Note: Make sure you download the file before uninstalling the wireless drivers as obviously you won't be able to download the driver file without any internet connection.

Agree that I did not uninstall drivers before installing new ones, will give it a go and then advise.
