Do I need an antivirus on my PC....?

3 installed Now

Yep if you mean Avast and Malwarebytes that's good and a couple of other on call scanners you might like to try in the future

Oh and little plus if you need to work n the Toshiba for any reason -
Taking apart Toshiba laptops and notebooks. DIY guides. Disassembly instructions. < then go to disassembly guides if you ever get stuck - post back:)

Thanks, I just disabled Avast, and MSE defender, then installed Malwbytes. Reabled MSED and Avast then ran MWB quick scan, and it found 0. Yea!

Avast has found two malicous things in past and gave me what my cloud technician step-son called a false warning. My freeAvast has also warned me a couple times of a suspect web site. MSED has never found anything but then again all reviews I had read said it is bottom of the list for converage.

I have installed RAM and HD drives on fruity Imacs( moderate difficulty ) and power books( relative easy ) been inside my wifes mac mini but only reconnected fan wire.

Hopefully wont need to go into this Toshiba. If i appear to have any trouble with MSED, Avast and MWB on same W7, 32 bit system will let you know. Really only one regularminor bug for me to still figure out, why Toshiba will always restart after shutoff, as long as its is plugged in.

If not plugged in, it stays off....no biggie for me, as i only use it here at home for most part.

Finally figured out the buggy way overly sensitive left click button setting. That was enough frustrating annoyance I would have got another computer before too much longer.

I could maybe figure out the shut off bug if I focused on it again, but ok for now.

Hum sounds like a power setting Rsix go into control panel and see what you have got set up.

Personally I would be dumping the "extra" AV either the MSE or the Avast.

You might also have a look at point #20 in this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html?filter[2]=Performance Maintenance

see if that makes any difference.

By the way did you try the other scanners?

By the way did you try the other scanners?

Updated new free Avast early today, so I think dropping MSED would not be a significant loss. i'm just relatively new to PC's and without buying AV, just wanted to get well covered without having conflict.

The three I have chosen, I believe will work well together. Time may tell. Suppose I could drop MSE and try the other one(s) suggested. Made a decision when getting this toshiba, W7 to go with a MS base of everthing ex. IE9 and not my trusted FFox, or unfamilar to me chrome etc...

I'm finally getting used to IE9, to the point that I think it has some nice features I like. Looking forward to IE10 tho it wont appear much differrent on W7 it will be more secure and security is my biggest concern in becoming a PC person.

I tried many differrent options in power options when first got the PC and none of them solved the issue. It will not come out of sleep or hibernation at all, so, I never put it to sleep/hibernate and it is always plugged in.

Not having a "kill time issue". Brink is great and has advised me recently ---then not sure how focused I want to get into the shutoff-back on minor issue. I'm one of those semi-anal people who learned early on to close, shut off perphials etc in proper seqential order.

My next door neigbor use to say I should have been a programmar with my overly analytical concerns--- thinking to much of how this led to that etc... ----but I missed that programmer boat by about 20 years. I'm no youngin...

Thanks for advice. Hope this above helps.

Yes Rsix I missed that boat too as for the IE10 I am pleased that it is supposedly more secure but the speed / load times are not like the IE9 used toe - perhaps I ma doing something wrong but all in all it is a great way to make ready for retirement as the bike and woodwork is out now:)

As for the security mate just chill a little because as I am always saying what you do on the computer is really the key. It is nice to have something watching your back but it counts for little if you are just plain carefree or reckless. I "fix" a fair number of my co workers (nursing and domestic staff) and it is usually down to seeing something nice to have (like iTunes) or getting that "This will fix all of your computer problems" apps that gets them into strife.
So keep your Avast and the on call scanners that will be plenty.

Usurped?

I'm lost. Has anybody heard from the OP, boyboyds. Some how his thread got stepped on.

Maybe this thread was usurped by a viral trojan, worming its way through the malware matrix with non-malicous intent, looking to latch itself onto a streaming thought of pure W7 radiance from above, leading the way out to the IE 10 light, and away from the underbugger belly of sinister portals. Or not. :)

My new malware has already found a potentially malicious site, so my thanks goes out to dude Indianna? who recommended it to me and/or others also.

Personally I don't use AV becasue I deem that I don't need them but I do recommend others I know to use AV that are not that into computers, the only program that I use is Malwarebytes, if I install MSE I only get BSOD after a while, I used AVG for years without it ever finding a single virus so got rid of it. For my surfing I use ad block plus and others to stop websites to load certain items and that seems to working since malwarebytes never find anything either. But this is just me.
Hum would interesting to see if SuperAntiSpyWare or the ADWCleaner came up with anything Andreas.

Yes mate as Bear says it is not an antivirus program in that is purely an on call scanner that I find handy.

Reading through many post on this Forum you will find that there are a few programs for cleaning out bad things we use a lot. Different programs do different things. No one program does it all or we would all surly use that program. AdwCleaner does a nice job for what it is designed to do. If you want to use it later you will have to download it again. There is a time and place to use different programs. Reading through post in our Security Thread will give you some good ideas. Many of us have thousands of post but believe me we do more reading and learning than we do posting.

AV For ME

As for the security mate just chill a little because as I am always saying what you do on the computer is really the key. It is nice to have something watching your back but it counts for little if you are just plain carefree or reckless. So keep your Avast and the on call scanners that will be plenty.

ICit, I'm finacially chilled enough that I have not purchased AV, again, I'm only using free stuff and Avast and my new Malwarebytes have detected malicious stuff and stopped me from opening a site(s) or kept the site(s) from opening.:D

It makes no sense to me, to not use free AV at a minimum, other than it may slow the computer some to do the checking. That time factor becomes more critical to those using dial-out. I just got off 15 years of slow-- 5kbps --a couple of months ago.

Just in time to get my first PC W7 and I'm lovin it. My thanks again go out to the dude who recommended Malwarebytes. I cant remember which recent thread I saw it on.:)

Now if I can just figure out how to get booted from my clone Ex. HD. That is the best security. imho.

I believe the general opinion is you open a can of worms trying to boot Windows 7 from an external hard drive. The preferred solution is to create a system image on the external drive and use that to restore your computer in the event of problems.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/217829-booting-external-hard-drive.html

Many people recommend the free Macrium Reflect for creating the system image. One of the Forum experts created this tutorial.

Many people recommend the free Macrium Reflect for creating the system image. One of the Forum experts created this tutorial.

With marsmimar 100% on that R6 and I don't know if marsmimar would agree with me but I would certainly do a fresh install and just get the data you need off the external - well that is what I would do.

By the way is the PC going to be a build or a pre built? If it iss pre built the I certainly wouldn't be mucking around trying to alter teh set up with the extenal stuff.

That Malwarebytes I think you would have seen all through the forum as just about everyone uses it and myself I use the SuperAntiSpyware and ADWCleaner I referenced earlier - from time to time they are not heavies.

I am assuming you have CCleaner on too - if not it is just about the best clean up tool you can use -
CCleaner - Download < download from piriform and watch out for any add ons - untick them if there is:)

Thanks mars, yeah I used macrium to clone but it appears that PC's can no be cloned ergo have to do the image thing for 2nd best security for a PC.

To me it is a no brainer to have complete clone, image or as much 2nd set of data as possible stored anyplace but on the PC's internal HD and AV, and Malwarebytes type program.

If I ever get extra money I will get paid Avast. I'm relative newbie to PC's but not having the above is like playing Russian Roulette with data. imho If you have nothing of critical significance on the PC, then yeah less concern.

Thanks again! r6

Well R6 I wouldn't say it is a complete no brainer I kept a clone (internal HDD's) of my original set up for each of my machines except the laptops. When started out building this is what I did and it saved me on a number of occasions by just slipping in the clone and away it went again minus some data of course;).
I must however disagree that you shouldn't keep some form of image on an external my friend and update it regularly as a form of insurance - unless you are going to have a mass of internal drives. If you are going to use one drive and use different partitions then if that drive dies then you in a world of misery:huh:

By the way you didn't say whether you were building or not or using CCleaner?

I have no idea what all that gibberish means. I would like to know if the OP boyboyds got fixed.

What is OP and what is supposed to be fixed...? I must be missing something here.

Thanks,

I repeat I'm using Avast, MSE-D, and Malwarebytes. Since I tried cloning and cannot boot from ext. clone--- as you or others stated is the case ---my intentions are to do the image thing on the ext. HD.

Again, to me all of the above is an abvious no brainer, for operating a Windows OS PC. Malwarebytes has found two more potential detrimental sites.

I cloned every mac I've owned and once had copy all data from clone back to original.. I'm not clear what the differrence is between clone and disk image. Hope to try that out in the next few days.
