Ok so i bought this laptop about 15 months ago, It is a toshiba satellite c660-28t. I have been really happy with it. However yesterday my girlfriend was using it as normal with nothing out of the ordinary , then this morning I tried to use it and it goes to the toshiba screen then says windows is loading files. after that it goes to the blue welcome screen and the only thing I can do is move the cursor (which is now about twice the usual size).
would really appreciate any help with this.
thanks

apologies if this is in the wrong section. I was not sure where to put it.

Are you able to boot into safe mode?

As the computer is booting press and hold your F8 Key which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu"

Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Hello and welcome MK no mate you are ok right here but do as AJ says and lets see if we can help out.

Just as matter of interest is the machine still at it's original specs ie you haven't added more memory or had the hard drive changed for any reason as I have found with Toshys the hard drive can be a real piece of work if you get my drift.

Ok first, thanks for all the replies. When I hold f8 from startup it will go to the boot menu , my options at this screen are:
repair your computer
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
anable boot logging
enable low resolution video
last known good configuration
directory services restore mode
debugging mode
disable automatic restart on system failure
disable driver signature enforcement

I have pressed enter on each of these but I get the same results every time. It says windows is loading files with a load bar then goes to the windows load bar(green one) for about 2 seconds then goes to the blue screen with a window that is black. The black window has a title at the top which says x:\windows\system32\dvrload.exe after a few seconds this disappears to leave me with the blue screen (with the swirls) permanently.
Thanks in advance

I gave you the steps to troubleshoot this. Did you even bother to read them?

yes I am currently in the process of reading them but thought I would be courteous and give responses to the other members as well .

I agree with Greg, there are a lot of things to try in that list. I would say a install CD is needed in this case if you can't get into safe mode or the recovery partition. If you don't have an install disc, then we can help with getting you on that path too....

Ah spoke to soon. Good to hear. let us know how you get along with the steps.

Ok so while I was going through the list a friend has just come over with a genuine installation disc for windows 7. So I popped it in and the same thing happened. I then went in to the boot setup bios and changed it to boot from the DVD drive first. Then started it up again, this time holding f8 . The boot menu appears and i select safe mode. This time the computer enters safe mode and gives me the option of installation or repair your system.I chose repair your system and nothing happened for a while. Then a window pops up that says system recovery options. this is where the computer is now. It is still on this screen and as the cursor is displaying the loading icon i am unable to select the next option. Does this normally take a while before I can select next?

It is searching for the windows installation on your compiter and then it will try an automated startup repair.

Give it a time. The next button may take a time to be executable.

ok so that window just stopped and I hit next. Then it brought up the window with the option of start up / repair so I pressed this and now it is doing something. Thanks to all of you so much for your advice so far.

ok so the first one just told me that i need to re starts for it to repair. so i did and it still started with the same problems. the second attempt has just finished and it says that if you have recently installed a device ,then to remove it.( i have not installed anything for a while and there is nothing connected to the laptop). so i view the diagnostic and repair details and it says number of repair attemps =1 and the number of root causes =1 . so i scroll down and they are all successful until i get to the bottom which says
no os files found on disk
repair action partition table error
result: error code =0x490
time taken=276309ms

i then clicked on advanced system options and am now doing another start up repair

ok but inbetween the first and second times, i tried to boot it as normal without the disc in. does this matter? does start up repair need to a consecutive run of 3 times to work?

If it doesn't detect an Installation to repair when you boot into Repair My Computer, then try the Bootrec commands from Step 7 of the tutorial which can force an installation to show up to repair.
