IE9 and YouTube HTML5 video

I know you can easily opt in and out of the trial but I wanted to see how others running IE9 find using youtube HTML5.

On my system which is a sandy bridge laptop (win 7 ultimate) everything runs brilliant under normal flash. But for HTML5 not so good. Embedded HTML5 vids within YouTube run fine but if I select full screen then I don't think the video is 100% fluid. It's watchable but it's almost if the fps is a bit down. Hard to explain really. The other thing I see is if I move the cursor in and out of the full sized window playing the html5 vid it causes a momentary black flicker. Basically everytime the cursor causes the controls / options into view it causes the flicker. Leaving cursor alone the video plays fine full screen albeit not silky smooth. I doubt GPU drivers are too blame as everything else is fine and whilst they are not 100% upto date they aren't really old either (just cannot keep up with ATI bringing out new drivers virtually every month). Also I have switchable graphics so I can also use less demanding intel GPU too and exact same happens with these.

I also have an older Dell XPS Core 2 duo laptop running vista and IE9. This does exactly the same except the fps are even worse making for a very choppy video (although I put it down to lack if power).

On my work computer also running IE9 and windows 7 the HTML5 vids seem to run a bit smoother and I don't see the black flicker although moving cursor on and out of video area causes a slight freeze of probably a micro second.

I would like to know what others see with this. Does youtubes HTML5 implementation/player just plain suck? Everything else on IE9 seems rapid and fine apart from this small quirk. I guess IE10 may handle HTML5 vid better but I don't want to go back to that as I noticed it had some bugs.

IE9 does exactly what you mention (a bit choppy and the occasional black line).

I tested with this video at 1080p full screened (1600x900@40Hz)

IE10 was almost perfect at 1080p full screened (1600x900@40Hz)
IE10 was running from within a VM with only 1GB RAM assigned...
...and only one core of the host's i5 assigned.
The host was pretty busy creating a large file filled with random numbers.

I was able to move the mouse and cause the top and bottom controls to appear/fade without anything going wrong within the video inside IE10.

IE9 an IE10 were full screened via F11 for those tests.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like nothing is wrong with my IE9 if you get the same. My laptop runs in 1920 * 1080. I guess the HTML5 video is still flakey. I think your right about IE10 handling it fine, in the brief time I had IE10 on my system before rolling back I don't recall noticing any issue with the HTML5 videos on youtube (although at the time I didn't pay specific attention).

I hope it's more a Youtube implementation issue as I worry HTML5 vids will be permanently forced upon us at some point soon. In turn this would force updating to IE10 which I perceive as buggy on windows 7 at the moment. When I had it was fast working with external sites but I saw annoying regular delays accessing internal devices via the WEB UI such as my router and NAS drive. These problems all went away once rolled back to IE9!

Youre' right, HTML5 and IE10 are bleeding edge. Cool but not-ready-for-prime-time.

As a side note, I previously played around a little with Youtube/HTML5. I did not opt into the Youtube HTML5 trial, just wanted to see how IE9 would handle video without Flash. AS I expected, only some of the Youtube vidoes played, others still required Flash.

Same thing for video on other sites, hit-n-miss.

Soooo, I'll wait for HTML5 to be more universal. Flash is now reinstalled on this machine.

Does yours play poorly in IE9 too? I kind of worry updating to IE10 and then rolling back to IE9 messed something up. I wish I could remember how the full screen HTML9 vids played before I did all that. All I know is despite IE10 bugs that outweighed its benefits the full screen HTML5 vids were fine. Now in IE9 they are a little bit choppy with black flicker when the cursor moved into the video error to trigger controls fade in. Keep it off screen and no flicker.

Not that I want others to have issues but if most see the same or similar under IE9 it will just reassure me that my internet explorer hasn't degraded in some way after rolling back. Everything else seems fine. Flash and silver light run great and web browsing is fast. Can't really tell much diff in speed compared to IE10. But it's the one HTML5 vid full screen that I worry

A lot of the playback quality depends on server traffic and of course the way you connect to your modem cable (wired or wireless). I connect with a built-in 'n' adapter so the highest speed is determined by that and noise from surrounding devices.

It also depends on the download/upload speed of your service plan.

Given my speed contraints, yes I do experience choppiness, but it seems adequate for my purposes. I do not experience the other symptoms (black line, fade, flicker). Remeber that I decided to re-install flash, so that might be a factor (I'm no longer depending on HTML5 alone-I'm not certain if Flash doesn't take precedence over HTML5)

If it becomes a great concern, you might want to uninstall IE9 (IE8 should be available afterwards), run Revo uninstaller to collect any garbage left behind. Reboot and reinstall IE9.

I dont think speed is an issue, i do connect wifi but the bar id always filled way ahead of playback position. i fet about 30 mbits and am connecting on 5 ghz so no noise to interfere. I just tried using Mozilla Firefox 12 which I have installed and it runs the HTML 5 vid better, a bit smoother and no flicker. i noted mozilla does it proper full screen whereas ie9 just fills the browser window but yiu still see taskbar, if that makes sense. so its just IE9 that is a bit iffy. It's watchable but ever so slightly choppy. My vista laptop running two 9800 gtx sli cards was even worse. Really choppy and same black flicker moving cursor in and out if video area which is why I thought IE9 was weak in this area or maybe youtube player was not upto scratch. Are youtube the only ones that run HTML5 videos or is there another site I can test with?

Try some of the TV networks. I think NBC supports HTML5 - it might be hit or miss on a certain news program, but I think I watched Meet the Press without Flash.

I tried surfing around. There seem to be very few sites that do HTML5 videos. Unfortunately I'm in UK so NBC refused to play vids as I am in wrong region. Most of them work ok but only within the page as often time there is not an option to go full screen. I did stumble across Video Marketing Tutorials, Industry Video Tips & More - ReelSEO Videos

Now there are youtube videos in HTML5 embedded when you click the link. Bizarrely my internet explorer 9 refuses to play the video at the top, the mini vid window just goes black and doesn't play. I find it weird as it is a youtube linked video and within youtube I can play HTML5 videos. Do you or anyone else see the same? On firefox the same video plays fine!
