Installed the Kaspersky trial and it is causing consistent blue screening. Fun part is, when I try to remove it, uninstaller crashes. This is just wonderful!

FWIW, I can confirm that SuperAntiSpyware and Trend Micro Internet Security are not compatible (both work perfectly with Vista).

Note that Trend is particularly squirrely: Originally, I just deactivated it using MSCONIG to prevent all the Trend Micro services and processes from starting at boot time. That seemed to solve the problem, but I kept getting 'reference-by-pointer' BSOD's periodically with no indication of the faulting process. Since Trend wasn't even running, I kept thinking it was a video driver problem. Eventually, I did a total uninstall on Trend Micro and haven't had a single BSOD since. Guess that even if the Trend processes/services aren't running, the mere presence of their drivers causes problems.

Strange. SuperAntiSpyware works just as well as it does in Vista on my Windows 7 machine. No issues.

Got KAV uninstalled.

Installed ESET NOD32 AV without a single hiccup. Version 3.0.669.0.

Attempted to install Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro, but got a BSOD when it attempts to install a network operation driver (AFW.SYS driver I think is the culprit).

I attempted an installation in safe mode, which worked somewhat. The application is installed, and it updates, and has some basic protection, but is unable to properly monitor network activities.

On another note: Just saw that Agnitum is offering Lifetime licenses for the price of a 1 year license ($40 + VAT), for 3 PCs.

So boiled down

ESET NOD32 Version 3.0.669.0 works like a charm on W7 build 7000 32-bit.

Agnitum Outpost Pro Firewall semi-works. I will play around with it some more.

UPDATE:

I have given up with Agnitum OPF for now. It seems impossible to make it work in current states.

Dudes, "eicar test file" ? lol, that's like...the first thing an AV will catch, it's the basic. Even the worst AV in the world, would catch that. I wouldn't call it a test, pretty far away from it. Anyway, the best thing to do is to download a zip with some hundreds of trojans, worms, macros whatever, then see if it can handle it. Be carefull of course. I have a cd with millions of samples, that's a hard test :)

i would actually be interested in that....:p
but an actually solution would actually to infect a machine and see if the av could actually take it out...

Hi Dark-one

Finally got around to making it over here from the other forum. All the familiar faces made it here well before I did..heheh

Anyway, I simply HAD to post a warning to everyone about that. Just because an AV or firewall installs easily and may "appear" to work, there is absolutely NO GUARANTEE that it is working properly!!!
Only the developers can tell you if their product is compatible with Win7 or not, and my experience tells me that Vista versions probably are NOT fully compatible for W7.

I sure hope most people see this little Warning, and don't take for granted that they are secure. No AV is fully secure to start with but to try and use a product that is not designed for your platform, and then place all your trust in it is simply Unwise at best...foolish at worst. Maybe I'll PM Shawn and ask him to put a little "Disclaimer" at the start of this thread just so people are aware of possible hidden issues.

Later Bro

Dave

Avira AntiVir Premium x64

To test your anti-virus products use the industry standard please: eicar | THE ANTI-VIRUS OR ANTI-MALWARE TEST FILE

This is a good idea to test your AV system, however this file is too outdated to be of any use as even Windows Defender catches it. Avira AntiVir Premium 2008 runs great on my x64 Windows 7 and has already caught several viruses that slipped right past Defender.
