Hello.
I have a notebook Acer E531 running Win 7.
Suddenly all my usb devices, touchpad and even keyboard happened to be disabled. If I run into safe mode they are still not working so I simply cannot unlock them... I scanned for viruses using AVG Rescue CD updated and Bitdefender which for some reason didn't update but they didn't find any viruses. I don't know how to enable the devices because I cannot access device manager in any way :D. Usb keyboard/mouse aren't working. I tried them in Linux (Unutu livecd and they work there). The touchpad isn't effected by the fn on/off command on the keyboard. I don't want to use system recovery but find another easier way. Any ideas?

It must be reading the keyboard in some way or it would not boot. Can you use the keyboard within the CMOS (BIOS) setup?

Yes I can use it. I didn't tried does usb devices work then but usb mouse works in Ubuntu and so is the keyboard. I believe it is a very good virus attack because the client said there were some error messages poping up before this happened. Now it loads Win 7 fine and don't show any virus behavior like ads and slowdowns but I cannot do anything just shutting it down :(.

In ubuntu(linux) only. Not in Win7 so it must be software/driver issue. The problem is how can I enable them if I cannot access device manager even from safe mode. :(

Why can't you access device manager?

benjy I said even in the original post that usb devices are working fine in another operating system. But Win 7 for some reason disabled them - possibly virus attack and I cannot open anything from Windows to fix the problem. :(

No but I currently can run ERD Commander and have access to registry/startup items on the installation :). SFC didn't helped (I don't recall if it helped even once after many uses on different situations!) and the event viewer wasn't very helpful.
I scanned for malware/rootkit using the integrated tool in ERD but it didn't showed results when it finished just some info about run time...

Try safe mode with command prompt and see if you can use them there and post back

Just another idea: Try doing a system restore to a point before this started happening using Safe mode.

He can't use the mouse or keyboard in safe mode :p

So just want to see if he can with safe mode with cmd. If they work there he can bring up explorer.exe and do a system restore

Oh thanks for pointing out, didn't notice, my bad. He won't be able to use cmd either, I think.

@OP: Boot from your Windows DVD, click on 'Repair your computer' after setup screen appears. Now choose 'System restore' from the list of recovery options and choose a point before all this started happening.

Yes that was my next set to give him. But just wanted to see if safe mode with cmd would work maybe has slight difference in settings that would make them work. Then he could maybe find the problem. But repair is good

I used system restore and it helped! But the only thing it said it could affect was a driver which wasn't listed with it's full path and description so I didn't write it down... I will update the Windows fully to make the system more stable and scan for viruses.

Solved!

Everything is perfect. Avast didn't find any viruses and the updates were successful. It would be interesting just to know how the problem can be solved otherwise :). Thread can be marked as solved and eventually locked.
