More Than 3 Out of 4 Enthusiasts Reject Windows 8

Dallas take a deep breath and ponder on this.

Windows 7 users don't want to stop or hinder any operating system on any device. We don't want people to use desktops if they don't want to. If people want their computing experience to be mobile that is hunky dory.

It's not a choice of take one or the other. (mobile or non-mobile) We want both or all. We want the ability of choosing which device to use and when. To make this happen we need operating systems that fits the way each device is designed to be used.
I know of no one who wants to stop or hinder the mobile market. Let it grow and allow those that choose mobile be happy. Please keep in mind that desktop/laptop users can and do use mobile devices also. I would venture to say that most mobile devices are designed for social media. That is a good thing if one choose to do that.

All PC/Laptop users are asking/wanting is a operating system that works well and correctly on such hardware.
The market place is telling the world that Windows 8 as it is today is not getting the job done. I'm not going to show a bunch of articles to prove a point; we have all read lots of them already.

Microsoft doesn't have to abandon 100 million plus PC/Laptop users to join the mobile market. Microsoft can be a big player in both markets and I wish them well in both.
Windows 7 users would move to Windows 8 when desired or needed if Windows 8 could get the job done.
Most of us have went up through the chain of Microsoft operating system which indicates we are not scarred of change. We like change but only when it is a change for the better.
All PC/Laptop users are asking for is a operating system the fits the needs of PC/Laptop users. We do not want Microsoft to abandon the mobile market to make a PC/Laptop operating system.
Microsoft could be a big player in both markets if they would remove their head from the dark orifice they have placed it in.

Bear I'm in total agreement with everything you've said. Like you, I have no problem with M$'s pursuit of the mobile market. My only issue is with their apparent abandonment of the desktop.
Like I've said before, I believe Microsoft could easily accomodate both interfaces in the same OS, but so far they have not done so. In fact they appear to have totally ignored the concerns of desktop users.

There's no need to abandon W8, just make the changes needed to accomodate both mobile and desktops, not just mobile like it is right now.

Bear I think your last sentence says it all, and says it perfectly:
"Microsoft could be a big player in both markets if they would remove their head from the dark orifice they have placed it in".

Let alone for a desktop .... I simply can't get comfortable with WIN8 on a touchscreen laptop..!!
Somehow, I feel it counter-intuitive having to keep on poking at the screen when it (the screen) is more than 30 degrees off the horizontal. On a tablet, the touchscreen input is ok.

MS has definitely screwed up ..!! I actually paid for 2 Win8 licenses (taking advantage of the initial "cheap" offer).
Today I have simply dumped both my desktop and my laptop Win 8 instals completely and reverted to Win7Pro x64 on both. For my smartphone, Android JB 4.1.2 satisfies me.

I'm so irritated, I'm even finding myself thinking that maybe it's a good time to finally give the fruit machines (...IOS..) a try ...

I installed Windows 8 90 day trial on my old rig, and I have not rebooted it since, I turned it off that day, over a month ago.

I did install one of the freeware Start Menu tools, I was prepared for that, just zero interest after that day, using that system for educational purposes, used to have Linux Mint 12 on it.

Maybe ugly 8 was ploy to sell more 7 and then more 9.

As PC sales tank, what's Microsoft's Plan B?

When market analyst IDC last week noted the sharp 13.9 percent quarterly drop in worldwide PC sales, it placed much of the blame on the "radical" user interface changes of Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system.

"Microsoft will have to make some very tough decisions moving forward if it wants to help reinvigorate the PC market," Bob O'Donnell, IDC's program vice president for clients and displays, said in a statement.

Therein lies a core challenge for Microsoft. The software giant doesn't really have a plan B.

... And Windows 8, which was supposed to breathe new life into the PC business, appears so far to be sucking wind from it.

Windows: It's over

Summary: You can think Windows 8 will evolve into something better, but the numbers show that Windows is coming to a dead end.

...Now, Microsoft could revive Windows 7 sales, or make Aero Windows 8.x's interface, but from everything we can see about Windows 8.1, aka Blue, that's not what they're doing. Instead, Microsoft seems to be doubling down on Metro.

Idiots.

You think the least they could do is give users a choice between a real Aero interface and Metro, but no, they won't do that. I don't know what it is, but lately, UI "experts" seem to want to create interfaces that only appeal to their builders and not to any of their users.

Here is a idea.
Remember back when Vista first came out.
Their were problems and the best I can remember there were many complaints. XP-PRO was the big dog in the pound and for it's day a great operating system.

Microsoft didn't go hide in the sand. They made improvement with some SP's and used the knowledge they gained to create Windows 7.
That is the company attitude that I like and want to see again.
Windows 8 isn't right for a major portion of their customers so Microsoft make it right. We know you can do it because you have done it in the past.

Any Board Members and or Management that don't agree with the make it right direction just put a little red (X) in the upper right corner of there employment agreement and TICK on it.

Greg in your post #860 you ask a very good question.

I wasn't making a statement so much as honestly asking: What replaces the desktop experience for the productive work that drives the world economy? How is this done on mobile devices?

I have absolutely no idea.
I see no way the productivity standard will ever be duplicated using mobile devices.
I see no way those standards will be matched using Windows 8 unless Microsoft makes changes.

Manufactures can make all the mini cars they want to but they will never replace a truck when you need truck work done.
Many people, business, and industry need a truck because they have a truck load of work that needs to be done.
A desktop/laptop with Windows 7 is the truck.

If it was, I guess I fell for it. Just before 8 was released, I bought an OEM version of W7 for my custom build to avoid 8, and right now I have a full retail version coming in the mail for future use.
So I'm still falling for it. ;)

I predict a huge surge ...

Use this article with caution and a lump of salt, Steven is used as a semi-official click-bait by ZDNet.

Even a broken (mechanical) clock is right twice per day.

Even though he is anti-Windows and pro-Linux, (IMO) he is right about W8 and Blue.
MS is planning to keep on "spitting in the faces" of desktop users.

I predict a huge surge in demand for pirated versions of W7.

Dunno about pirated, you can still buy the boxed copies on Amazon. They sell better than 8 boxed copies, obviously, so don't know if you find them easily in say 6mths time.

Be careful about buying software from Amazon. I've seen too many reports of bogus software being sold there to trust them for software. And their Marketplace vendors aren't any better than FleaBay.

It's astounding to me the market is not moving even faster to clobber this.

Since when will stockholders allow a corporation to actually hold back a wildly popular product to try to force consumers to buy a hated one deemed by almost everyone to be an unworthy successor if not an outright flop? It only took a few days with New Coke as I recall.

Making it even more absurd is that in spite of trying to scare business into 8 with dire warnings of BIOS infections without Secure Boot, business has spoken loud and clear and is choosing Windows 7 to replace XPired.
