No abacus but I worked after school for a major paper manufacturing company in the accounts receivable department. I used a Comptometer. This thing was like an abacus 2.0. I had to run a balance tape of sales transactions for the previous day. Some would be just a piece of paper with some hen-scratching. The Comptometer is like an adding machine but there was a key (1-9) for each position up to 999,999,999.99 and a pull handle. I worked from 2pm-5pm M-F and the tape would be about 30-40 feet long. Man, I hated that job but it paid many expenses and I got a referral after graduating. My first job out of school was a programmer with a top local CPA firm.

I can't even remember all the OSs I've used. Pick any mainframe OS in use from about 1972 to 1995 and any micro/mini/PC OS from about 1976 to present and I've used it.

Well, I guess the first computer I ever used was my brain (plus fingers and toes ).

As far as O.S.'s go this is as close as I can get: 98, then 95, Millenium, xp, Fedora, Vista, Red Hat, 7, Zorin. You can throw 8 in there after 7 and before Zorin if you like, I tried the Beta, I guess it was and it hasn't been on my machine since.

I forgot to add IBM OS/2 to my list. It was comparable to Windows 3 but was a better version that IBM developed during the period they were at "war" with Microsoft. We had it at work and had it installed on IBM PS/2's (I had racks of the PS/2's for Token Ring "Bridges") and had it an a 486 CPU machine for IBM's Lan Network Manager.

OS/2 was originally a Joint development project of Microsoft and IBM, until MS pulled out and IBM carried on alone, A version is still available although IBM stopped support many years ago

I worked on such a product but IT departments were hesitant to install OS/2 servers since they lacked the expertise to support them. We ended up rewriting the software to use Win NT instead. For a short time we actually were developing for OS/2 and Win NT concurrently.

The OS I left off my list is Android. I have an Android phone, 2 Android tablets and an Android mini-PC.

Our use was for running single application, Data acquisition and control systems, so IT managers were not an issue
We used a few versions of OS/2 up to and including Warp.

From 1995 onwards we started to migrate to NT and were fully on NT for Client - Server configurations by the end of 96, when NT 4 was more generally available The SCADA systems used a lot of dedicated I/O and the HAL suited this way of working.

We were so at the cutting edge at that time we used to get the System engineers for the SCADA developers ringing us up for help with systems they'd sold to our competitors We never led them astray of course :sarc: although it did mean that we could get the software developers to fly out to site to solve issues themselves, that certainly impressed the client

Britton, have you checked VirtualBox Virtual Appliances | VirtualBoxImages.com They might have it.

OS/2 was really in some aspects ahead of its time. Compared to Windows 2.0 which was released about the same time OS/2 was superior in so many ways.

I liked it, quite a lot.

A virtual appliance in this context is a pre-installed operating system on a virtual hard disk. Other type of virtual appliance is a specific pre-installed application running on a specific OS on a virtual machine.

To use a virtual appliance simply download it, create a new virtual machine selecting existing virtual hard disk (your downloaded virtual appliance) and run the vm.

VDI (Virtual Disk Image) is a virtual hard disk format used for instance by VirtualBox.

First Real OS'es -- 1 ) Mainframe IBM MVS/370 - running this on an "Emulator" -- HERCULES -- note it's not a VM but emulating real IBM s/370 instructions. Screenshot enc including a TSO session.

2) Windows 3.11 screenshot enc .

(Earlier versions of Windows were just "Toys" -- Windows 3.11 was my first REAL working Network OS that was used in the workplace too).

I learned on Windows 3.1, and always liked it.
My WfW 3.11 setup is still perfectly useable even today.
The only real drawback with it nowadays is its lack of decent security
so I don't let it (or indeed most of my older OSes) loose online.
