May's Patch Tuesday to fix two critical flaws in Internet Explorer

This coming Tuesday, Microsoft will issue fixes for 33 vulnerabilities in total, including two critical flaws relating to Internet Explorer, affecting all versions of Windows.

While few details are given about the security issues, today's advanced security bulletin outlined flaws in a range of other products, including Microsoft Office, .NET Framework, Microsoft Lync, and Windows Essentials.

Where did that 739 number come from? I don't have nearly that many on my system.

When Windows 7 SP1 was released it included approximately 100 Updates and an additional 100 Hot Fixes. I haven't look lately but maybe another 100 since SP1.

Reller shared some additional Windows 8-related numbers during a meeting I had with her at Microsoft's New York City headquarters on Monday, May 6.

She said the Windows team has delivered 739 updates for Windows 8 and Windows RT in the six-plus months since those operating systems were made generally available. These updates have included everything from battery-life improvements, to drivers, to security fixes.

You are correct lehnerus2000; that is where I got the information. I don't know how true the statement is but I did read it in the article.

The 739 patches in six month seems a lot. If you do a search for Windows 8 patches at:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin

The number does not even come close to 739. The combined number for important and critical patches, Windows 8 (32 and 64-bit) and Windows RT, is 62 patches.

While the search does not list optional patches, the chances are that the 739 includes patches for all other MS products running on Windows 8.

Many Updates contain more than a single patch - that why there's a discrepancy in the numbers.

They should be offered if you have updates to to Automatic.

Weird

Did anybody notice any unusual things after installing the May updates?

I've created a custom logon screen theme (a colour change from blue to purple for the user tile) using Logon Workshop.

After I installed the May updates I noticed that my theme was different.
When I checked the dll location I discovered that the dll had been replaced. :shock:

The new dll has a different date to my original W7 dll (I have that backed up along with my modified one).

this didn't happen to me, try going to uninstall the update that did this and if you have to restart your computer for the uninstallation to take effect and then go back into Windows Update and check for updates and if the update comes up again and hide the update

Everything else seems to be running as per normal.

A bit odd, the two .NET Framework 4.5s were optional. I know little about what goes on under the hood so I install everything regardless, though I do always make my own restore point before downloading.

Update to improve messaging of dialog boxes when you run executable files in Windows
The update mentioned in the link above should have replaced that file.
You should mod the new file... not put the old one back.

...on your computer?
Do you have KB2798162 installed?
(Start > View installed updates)
