sygnus, If you are building for gaming I would go with

CPU I5 3570. (K version if overclocking)
Hyper 212 EVO + (If overclocking or noise is an issue)
16G DDR3 1600Mhz G-skill or Corsair
Good Z77 motherboard
AMD HD7950/70 or Nvidia GTX670/680 Video Card
Quality 650W PSU (Seasonic/Corsair)
Case of your choice with lots of room.
1TB HDD
1 120 Gb SSD

I would only go with an I7 if you do intensive work.

Try pcpartspicker, or newegg to read reviews.

As far as Haswell, yes it is a new socket and motherboard series.

Alright boys & girls, I'm looking to build a high performance system since my old Q6600 backup system is starting to act up. What does that mean? Well, if that system goes, I have to share my current system (first gen i7. See system spec) with the rest of the family... and that just can't happen

So, the new system will replace this one, and this will replace the Q660 system. It's ready to retire anyway.

That said, I've been wanting to get one of the newer processors, mainly the Intel i7-3930K Hexa-Core. I'm trying to decide on which z79 motherboard to get. I've thus far looked at these motherboards...

- ASUS x79 Rampage IV Extreme
- ASRock X79 Extreme 9

I plan on getting a minimum of 16 gig of RAM. Probably this - Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum Series 16GB

As for graphics (AMD only), I'll just go with a single high end card. Still don't trust Crossfire.

No I'm not made of money, but in all my time owning and building computers, I've never once had what I consider a high end system. This time I'm going for it. Just have to save my pennies over the next coming months - by Sept.

Anyway I could use a few suggestions. It's been a while since I've actually looked at this stuff, especially motherboards.

Thanks :)

BTW, what's the story on Haswell? New chip, different motherboard?

Those are definitely high end components. What will you being using this machine for?

Thanks Dude, but...

- Gotta be a high end i7.
- Already have a PS
- Already have HD's & SSD drives.
- Already have a case

See my system specs. Also other system has PS, HD's & other stuff.

Seeing as you won't be buying until September, you can see how Haswell performs, I think there might be an Ivy E platform or Haswell E platform due by the end of the year too, so keep your eyes peeled.

Yeah, Haswell might be a way to go. Problem is, it'll be new tech, and I'm not sure I feel like going down that path. But, it is worth looking into I suppose. I just hate to have to go with a first revision of this and that.
I'll do some research and see what's up.

Thanks

Thing is, the regular Haswell, like the i7 4770k is due out in around 10 days, so by the time you come to buy it will be well proven if it's any good or not.

You have plenty of time anyway before you buy so don't worry about it too much.

If you are looking for a Socket 2011 build........wait until Ivy Bridge-Extreme comes out. It's new parts, but not a new socket/platform. You get your pick of a new line of CPU's, or you can pick up a Sandy Bridge-E CPU on sale.

Good, I look forward to it.

I was due to be laid off (made redundant) from work in 6 days, but right at the last minute someone I work with found a new job, I then negotiated a cracking deal with the boss to stay, more money and less hours so I now have more money to blow on mindless upgrades :roflmao:
