Hello. I just recently put my linksys into security protection. I'm unsure why...when I look on my laptop, I see 2 different networks? My old default name of Linksys and my renamed protected network. I tried to access the Linksys name and it does not work...which is correct. What did I do wrong?

You need to drop the other Access point you created and then go through the steps again of securing the router

it would be wise just to put the disk in after you deleted the previous access points and go through it clean and then you should have it corrected

I'm pretty green with this...how do I drop the access point? Is this within the router settings? Thank you much.

on your computer Wi-Fi delete all the connections you have made

reset the wireless adapter then insert you router cd

go through the steps if it ask for a password enter it after that follow the cd instructions and make a wpa2 connection new name new password

then try to reconnect with your wireless it should only show one after that and your list will be clear of all other connections you used to have it would be like getting a new pc again

As to not go on a wild goose chase, I looked in my "neetwork and sharing center" (if that's where any wifi connections would be) and I don't see anything. I've searched for "wifi" and nothing comes up. My router gives me the choice for WEP...no WEPA. Where would I look for these "wifi connections" you speak of? Thank you.

He's talking about the wifi 'hotspots' that you can see when you click on the vertical bars icon on the bottom right corner.

If your laptop is not able to pick up your wifi network, it's because either your wifi network is not setup or it's set not to be broadcasted. check that your wifi network is setup correctly. If it is, whether it is broadcasted or not you should still be able to connect to it. By auto detection or manually adding in the wifi network.

ok, i understand now. I was trying to see this on my main tower, that the linksys router is connected to.
So if I have 3 laptops, will I have to delete from each machine? Thx for pointing this out. On my main tower, it just shows my network internet access square thingy in bottom right hand corner. Oh and I am able to pick up the wifi...but like I said it shows 2 different names. I'll work at this when I get a minute and report back. Thx, DM

It shows two different names could be the systems hasn't been refreshed. Hopefully this will go away.

I'm on my lap top. Was able to delete any networks I didn't want...one being the Linksys name. I click on the little lines in lower right corner, and both names are still showing. Is there someway to "refresh" the router, in the router settings? Do I just need to do a master reset of the router and start over? Why is this so difficult?

solved

the reason i had 2 names for routers, was because i didn't have my re1000 linksys extender properly set up.
once I figured out how to defaul settings of the extender, it asked for the router password and BAM, all is well. I'm set for now.

I didn't realise you have an extender. So basically both routes were sending out wifi names. Good to know its solved.

I had initially set up ext. without protection...small spread out community. When I added the extender...well...that didn't work anymore and should have known that I'd have to enter my security line in that too. All is well and that extender really boost the signal for me. Now I want something for my 6.0 home phones. Thx and take care :)

still showing to user names

Hello. I have this same problem that now I have my router set up encrypted, it shows (on 2 laptops in my house) there are 2 connections to the same profile. One of them can "not" be used. Like it is there along for the ride. So I select the other name and then enter my (long arsed) password and boom, it works. Why on earth are there 2 of the same network profiles? It has to be something to do with the Linksys router and the way I have something within, set up. Anyone?

Coming back on this thread, after some time and thought. I opened up my network connection a few days ago and noticed there was only the 1 network available of mine, as it should. If I go into the SSID and disable it within Linksys settings, should I still see this as an available network, or should it be invisible. I thought that is what SSID did.

Whatever the case, I have it disabled and I currently see my network on my laptop. (or could it be that is because I am connected to it?)
