i have an amd phenom II x4 965 black edition. my ram is stock clocked at DDR3 1600. i've discovered from a previous thread that my cpu can't handle ram speeds over 1333 and the main credit to this is here. i know it cant handle it because it periodically BSOD's. the original thread i figured this issue out is here.

so what i've had to do with my old motherboard and with my new motherboard is just lower the ram speeds to 1333 in the bios. no big deal. however, what i seem to be finding is that typically, when one overclocks a cpu, you usually overclock the ram as well? i may be wrong.

my question is, can my ram be overclocked if i overclock the cpu? or will it have to stay at 1333?

Actually the two are separate from each other with some practical limits shared. There normally is a limit the ram can be pushed or nominally work even as base speeds with some CPU's. My AMD 8 core installed on a mobo able to OC ram to 2400mhz with 2133mhz ram the best I could OC them was 1832 mhz. So with this being said you should work the OC on the CPU and leave your ram underclocked to 1333 and then if you want you can tighten up the timings or just leave things alone.

The Intel boards well OC ram with normally better results than the AMD boards. The AMD memory controller seems to be the problem.

My mem is rated at 1866 and when I use two sticks (8mg) I run at 1866. When I run four sticks (16mg) it rolls back to 1366, limitation issue of the FX cpu. I have managed to OC the 16mg configuration to 1644.

I have a fx8350 one day away, I may have better results with it.

yea, i think i will leave the memory alone as long as its with this cpu. i actually just ordered an 8350 yesterday and it should be here by the end of the week as well. now i gotta shop for new ram for that. 2 weeks from now ill be buying a 7970 too.

i was just wondering about this ram with this processor because ill probably be donating my old parts toward my brother's first build over the summer.

thanks for the insight

madcratebuilder,
You'll have to post pictures of your new 8 core rig in "show us your rig" !

I'll snap some pic's while it's apart for the new cpu.

In hindsight I should have bought the 8350 and better gpu's initially. I didn't really have a budget, just a cheap sob. I just picked a arbitrary number to stay under and now know I could have noticeably better performance for not that much more...cpu and gpu, everything else is GTG.

I'm drooling over the 7990:p, concidering selling the 7770's and going with a pair of 7950's. "Do you really need this to d/l your mail"... my ball and chain asks.

Well you both need to post some pictures. My other rig is a 8120 fx and it's a mad dog. If the 8350 is anything like it and of course it is, it will OC like crazy but you'll want great cooling to push it real far!

EVO is good but Liquid is just a lot better and gives you more OC room
