Solved Canon Digital Cameras - USB Drivers Do Not Work Through Reboots

Computer off the domain, as in never connected to the domain, acts the same. Cannot see the cameras pictures (storage) after reboot. AHHHHH! Any other ideas? -WS

OP When you recently tested the machine with 7 and Office 2010 did you test for the issue before it was joined to the domain?

Tried this, unfortunately it acts the same, no access to camera after reboot. -WS

Updates: We now have a brand new Canon PowerShot SX50 HS for testing. Bad news it does the same thing.

Loaded the Canon software for both cameras, no drivers seem to be installed and does not fix the problem. <== Thanks for the idea. -WS

I presume you had the AC Adapter connected and switched on when you tested the USB connection? My Canon wont connect unless the AC power is on!

I presume you had the AC Adapter connected and switched on when you tested the USB connection? My Canon wont connect unless the AC power is on!

Humm Nope, No AC Adaptor with the camera, must be extra. This camera acts the same as all Canon's works correctly per USB port until reboot. Software install does not add drivers nor did it fix the problem of re-gaining access to the camera. (Someone suggested software install added drivers)

Re-imaged machine and camera works, installed software while camera works, and software and camera work. Once the machine is rebooted camera stops working and the software can no longer access camera.

I noticed in the registry that Canon creates some bizarre entries, unlike the other camera's. Wonder if this is really the problem. I noticed that Windows 7 Home creates the correct keys ?? Wondering what is different from Windows 7 Home and Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate. UGH! -WS

I'm afraid I am the wrong person to ask about Registry Keys. Whether you are on Win 7 Home or Ultimate shouldn't make any difference. I'm lost i'm afraid. You would think though, as you have a number of Canon cameras and therefore have invested quite heavily into the Company that they would be a bit more forthcoming. I wonder if you listed the Canon Cameras you have a put a total value to them and went back to Canon pointing out your financial commitment they would give some more thought to the problem. Worth a try perhaps!

Well I can tell you it's not a Windows 7 / Canon Camera compatibility issue as there are plenty using Window 7 and Canon cameras.

That said, it is weird that the OP is having issues with a multitude of Canon cameras under Win 7

True but I think you wil find that most users take the card out of the camera and use a card reader. This is much the quickest way for most uers as even if you get the transfer by USB working it takes about three or four times as long to transfer a single photo compared to the card reader approach.(And that's providing you can remember where you put the USB cable!)
Problem is the USB Transfer way is the one that suits the OP best in a corporate environment!

The point is it's not a compatibility issue between Win 7 and Canon.

Removing the card from the camera is a completely different topic, and has nothing to do with the issue at hand. And for the record, I don't remove my card from the camera. And if you look around some photo sites like dpreview.com, it's basically 50/50.

But regardless the percentage, it's not the solution the OP seeks, nor does it solve the problem.... why are the Canon cameras having issues with USB while the others are not?

I have been working on the assumption that it is a compatibility issue wuth Windows 7 as the USB connection worked fine for all the Canon cameras when the PC's had Windows XP installed.
I agree that using the card is not a solution for this OP, that topic was only raised as so many Canon users have the same problem and they seem to use a card reader and forget the USB.
As you say

Yup, we have called Canon many times, no luck so far they keep pushing it off on our computers are not configured correctly. I am beginning to think it maybe Windows 7 Enterprise problem there must be some difference there. Looks like all of our Techs home computers work just fine. Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate are all the versions everyone has at home. We had everyone take home a camera over the last few days and try to make it NOT work. All cameras worked at home. -WS

I agree, I sent a bunch of cameras home with our techs to test and all cameras worked in their homes. Windows 7 Home, Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate all work. So far it is only these work computers and they are all running Windows 7 Enterprise. Somehow there must be a difference. -WS

All roads point to driver either USB mono driver or Canon driver/ utility. If it was the correct drivers windows will not have issues remembering an detecting the device after reboot. Sometimes the incorrect drivers are store on the machine and and these get loaded each time. I've had experience with Canon all in 1 devices. They are very drivers and software orientated.

The OS has nothing to do with the device drivers or hardware. Please do not discount drivers if you do not know exactly what drivers are. More or less they are .dlls files which if there are one single of these .dlls files missing or no compatible they will cause problems somewhere down the line.

Perhaps you should go through this thread before telling us what to discount or not. You might see that a myriad of ideas have been suggested.

OP, have you tried Vista drivers?

We are not using any OEM drivers, all drivers are built into Windows 7. The driver is the same driver used for all cameras, Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. -WS

I agree with Windows is Windows is Windows but this issues is so bizarre I am beginning to wonder. :shock:
