New build not powering on, Any Suggestions why?

So today I bought my self parts to build a new computer for my parents, here are the parts:
A10-5800K
Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H
Cooler master elite 342
Kingston 4GB DDR3-1600
Western Digital 1 TB blue Sata3
And the power supply im not sure but its a 420W PSU that came with the case, I think its quite low quality but as it came with the case i thought i would just go with it

So when I assembled everything, it didn't start up and the lights just flickered, Then I Connected the Power + and Power - pins together with a screwdriver and the CPU make kind of quiet clunking noises and the PSU fan spun for a brief sec.

Is this caused by not having a PSU powerful enough or is this probably some other reason? though a online wattage calculator says i only 240W for this system :/

If its the PSU Im thinking of getting a Cooler Master GX 550W 80+ Bronze

My bet is that the PSU is the culprit because the PSUs that come with these cases are utter crap. I apologize for the way I said that, but I don't know of any other way of saying it right now.

The Cooler Master GX Bronze Series units aren't bad; they're not great, but they're actually somewhat decent. Of course, you can do better than the 550W GX Bronze Series. ;)

This is a stupid thing to do, never do it again. You are risking your own life and/or to fry your hardware.

Other than checking again your cabling and that you did not screw up with jumpers and whatnot (check the motherboard manual), I tend to agree with the guy above. You probably got a crappy PSU in that case.

As far as PSUs anything that has the 80+ certification is fine. It means that they are tested and can reach and keep 100% of their stated capacity without dying horribly. For a general-use PC you don't need more than that.

Was discarded by previous owner due to "horrible performance".
Was running Win Xp from a IDE drive. Yeah. Was a pain.
SATA II drive and Win7 and it zips away! Yay!
As long as the PSU is working, it should be more than enough for that system.

I hope that you meant that you bridged the pins on the front panel header. (That's a legitimate way of checking for a defective case power button.)

Did you connect the 8 pin (probably 4+4 pin) 12V CPU power connector? (Just guessing at random here.)

Hum pity I didn't see this before this is what you should have had a look at first mate http://www.sevenforums.com/vip/257690-psu-how-test.html#post2130086

Using screwdrivers like that well again very reckless and as Twp Cables says the generic struff is crap. Fra better off witha a few extra dollars and get a good one.

I like Corsairs personally and this might have ben a good buy for you Corsair CX-750 V3 Power Supply [CMPSU-750CXv3] - $109.00 : PC Case Gear

or better still Corsair HX-650 V2 80 PLUS Gold Power Supply [CMPSU-650HXv2] - $139.00 : PC Case Gear

As AddRam has asked I hope these were the right way round - I don't know what the actual consequences of reverse polarity would have been on a mobo but I have destroyed many devices and dedicated components in the past by doing that - even briefly.

I'm sorry, but this is not true. There are 80+ Certified PSUs that are utter garbage and should be avoided.

As I said, the PSU is garbage. I want to help you select a new PSU.

Can you order from PC Case Gear? Or, where can you order from?

How much would you be able to spend?

Finally: will you ever have a video card that's better than the 7770? If so, then what might you get?

For now with your system with the 7770 in it, all that you need is a good quality-made 350-400W PSU (and this is overkill).

Here's a list of PSUs that I recommend from PC Case Gear that are all under $100.

If you can spend more than this, then please say so because there are better PSUs to recommend that cost more, but are worth it.

You'll notice that I didn't recommend any Corsair PSUs from PC Case Gear. This is because for under $100, this is all they have:

  • VS350
  • VS450
  • CX430 V3
  • VS550
  • CX430M (semi-modular)
  • CX500 V3
  • VS650
  • CX500M (semi-modular)
  • CX600
  • GS600
  • CX600M
The problem is that all of these are inferior to the PSUs I found and recommended above. The ones I recommended are designed to be able to deliver their rated wattage continuously (24/7) up to an internal PSU temperature of 50°C. This is due to a good build quality combined with good Japanese Capacitors rated for 105°C. All of the Corsair units that are listed here can only deliver their rated wattage continuously up to an internal PSU temperature of 30°C due to cheap capacitors rated up to 85°C. The only exception is the GS600 which can go up to 40°C, but the caps are still not as good as the caps in the PSUs I am recommending. To add insult to injury, the GS600 is $99.00! That's very overpriced, especially when you consider that you can get the modular 520W Antec High Current Gamer for $97.00, and also considering that you don't need anything more than a good ~350W PSU!

I used to like Corsair, but it looks to me like all they're trying to do these days is make as much money as possible. I mean, I bet that these PSUs cost them a lot less to manufacture than the ones I am recommending due to the lower quality of parts inside, yet they're all at very similar prices to the ones I'm recommending (except for the first 3 Corsair units there)! Figure that one out. lol

Was the point of this thread telling everybody how you blew up your old PSU by jiggering around with it and a screwdriver? If not, then I think you missed the point of posting in a forum and asking for advice.

So what PSU did you get for the new build mate I thought like Two Cables you were having problems with the current (new) build

I think maybe a visit here first might have been the go because this sounds like your fist build and yep screwdrivers and board pins don not mix.

I thought you were upgrading the build in your profile. I don't know why I thought that because you did say that it's a build for your parents.

What PSU did you get? Yes, it's important enough to discuss. If you got the 550W GX Bronze series, then you may have been ripped off. Besides, I don't see a video card, so all this build would need is a ~300-350W PSU. Of course, due to what's available on the market, I would recommend one of the PSUs I linked above in my big edit to the post you're replying to here.

Yeah, I'd like him to spell it out for us too because I admit that I'm not 100% clear on this either. The only reason I recommended any PSUs at all is the GX Bronze series is not the best choice even though it's still a somewhat decent series of PSUs. Not only that, but he said that the PSU that came with his case blew up and he said nothing about finding a replacement and that it works.
