Well my windows 7 install was fine all the way up to RTM when my computer started freezing randomly for about a minute. I have tried reinstalling and linking it to a specific application but still cannot find the cause.

I do get an error message in event viewer which says this:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

The times when this error appears do not coincide with when my laptop freezes however. I've tried disabling DMA and formatting my hard disk to no avail.

So if anybody could help me solve this mystery, hopefully without buying a new laptop I'd be very appreciative!

EDIT: I've also tried S.M.A.R.T tests on my hard drive and all came back fine.

Hmm that is very odd, does your RTM copy show a build number in the bottom right-hand corner? (just curious)

Also you could try re-burning the DVD (assuming you use a DVD) at the slowest speeds possible. :)

Could you

1-go into device manager (type device managaer in search) and look for your hard drive. Make sure its listed and isnt "unknown" (have a yellow triangle over it)

2- go into event viewer (yeah type that) and look in the app tab to see if there are any errors listed that relate to the current problem.

If either isnt correct could you use snipping tool (type snipping) to take a screenshot of it and upload it to us

Thanks

The service control error is a timeout. its waiting for a repsonse from dev 0 (hard drive). Is the hard drive internal?, a raid?, sata? something is going on with the HD. that would explain why it carries over from install to install. Btw you can read abt it here Event ID 7009 — Basic Service Operations

Clean install? 32 or 64?

Ken

On a new clean install, do you get those service errors? Have you upgraded the bios? have you upgraded the 945gm driver?

i have noticed since running build 7100 that when i go to access my other two hard drives that it will sit there for about 20 seconds before allowing further access. i thought it was just a problem with the drives. i reinstalled vista and i do not get the problem. i go back into 7 and the problem is back. i do not think 7 is fully supporting the chipset software yet. the reason i say this is the fact that under the beta 7 had a problem with the usb controllers and would drop all usb devises when i would unplug just one. hopefully once the full version comes out mikey-soft will have address this problem.

Yes I do, yea driver programs say I'm up to date. However am not sure about how to upgrade my bios, my laptop was store built so I dont really have many settings to fiddle with in the bios, how could I upgrade it?
