Solved Download Shortcut.url File = Lose the Custom Icon for It?

What is the best way to....
- Make a file that users can download which has a custom icon and takes them to the website of my choice?

Currently,
I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a website of which I have assigned a custom icon (.ico file) and everything looks and works great on my computer. The customer icon is not a Windows default .ico file

I save the file to SharePoint 2010 and when users download the file (shortcut.url) they don't get the custom icon, just a shortcut with a missing icon image.

Hello Poagman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal for a referenced custom icon on your PC to not be included with the shortcut like this.

About all you can do is to also include the icon with the shortcut so that they can save the icon where they like on their PC, then change the shortcut's icon to target the icon's location on their PC.

Thank for the reply. I changed the icon to one pre-loaded with Windows and it is still lost when users download the Shortcut.url file.

So, custom isn't just for what I made an icon, but also Windows icons not set as the default for the shortcut (right?).

Can anyone in the forum help with setting up a self executable that when downloaded
- Adds a shortcut to Desktop
- Downloads and installs an icon to users icon folder
- Assigns downloaded icon to shortcut

This exe will have to be saved as a self-extracting zip file once created as I am blocked from posting exe's to our SharePoint 2010 site.

The shortcut in the zip you provided had the Globe icon with a monitor in-front of it (carried over).

I don't seem to get the same results when right-clicking on a shortcut & choosing "Send to...Compressed (Zipped) folder". When I open it there is just the default globe icon.

All I see is the globe icon as well when the URL shortcut is in the ZIP file. Only when the shortcut is extracted to say your desktop first, then you'll see the carried over icon.

Work-Around Found

I ended up just saving the icon to "Site Assets" and then having the SharePoint v4.Master accessible via SP Designer reference it as the "favicon".

It now shows in the address bar, Bookmark list, and Desktop if you Drag-&-Drop shortcut from Bookmarks.
