Solved Home Premium to Ultimate

Is it worth the $100+/-? I have a second box with XP/SP3 running so XP mode isn't that big of selling point.

i really don't think here's a need to go ULTIMATE now, i heard pro is better for home users, but idk why, just what i heard, and alot of modified builds are BASED ON pro idk why again, but, u never know.

The "Previous Versions of Files" tab in the Property Page in Ultimate is convenient. But you can get the functionality free by using Shadow Explorer freeware. You can go into a restore point and dig out individual files etc..

Afa group policy editor and that type of stuff.. only you know if you want to use them.

edit: if anyone installs multiple flavors of W7 on multiple systems maybe you can speak to the fact/myth that the W7 Ultimate installer may be smarter about putting only the files you need.. requiring a smaller footprint.

Hmm, I've never seen anyone say Pro is better for home users. From those comparison charts, I don't see any home user who would benefit from Pro except for perhaps very advanced power users.

If you don't need XP Mode, the ability to join a domain, or the need to address more than 16G of RAM, which are the major reasons to upgrade from Home Premium, then I would say that it wouldn't be worth it. However, as others have already said, only you can say whether it's worth to you or not.

The difference is features, the performance will be identical. Many of the features that are included in Ultimate can be supplied by 3rd party programs.

I have both but as I'm not a power user and don't need the language packs or extra encryption there is no advantage in the upgrade just for upgrades sake.

The professional and Ultimate editions have many advantages but they aren't particularly important to a home user.

The Ultimate and Enterprise editions are essentially identical. The only real difference is that the latter is not a retail product but available only to large organizations with bulk licensing.

They are all the exact same OS with a few extra expensive features to unlock - which have better 3rd party freeware alternatives like Team Viewer, virtualizing freeware, etc.

As strollin mentioned.. for a home user or system builder who likes to max out the ram on the system, the memory limitation would be the most important consideration.

My other win 7 and 8 machines are 64 bit so I decided not to have Ultimate on 64 bit so I can't take advantage of the extra ram, but for my purposes 3.5 gb works fine. I am hedging my bets in case some legacy software cannot run on 64 bit.

If it's 16-bit, no it can't.

The Wikipedia comparisons are very interesting, the 192 gb allowance for ultimate is generous but check out win 8 pro, you could use 512 gb. None of my pc's have more than 8 gb installed although two of my motherboards can accommodate 32 gb. I have found that adding extra ram seems to follow the law of diminishing returns most of the time.
