Wifi network based on a USB connection

Hi everyone.
First and foremost, I would like to congratulate you on this helpful forum.
My problem is the following:
I'm trying to connect my laptop to the Internet, using my desktop computer (Acer) Internet connection.
My Acer is connected to the internet through a USB "stick" (normal, with no WiFi capabilities).
I also connected a WiFi Linksys router in order to create a wireless network with the laptop.
The router has an entry to a phoneline, and while having an ADSL connection (not so long ago) it served me just fine with the same purpose.
Right now I don't have ADSL (unfortunately), so the routher cannot connect directly to the Internet.
So, what I am trying to do is have my Acer Internet service "transmitted" to the laptop through the WiFi router.
Can it be done? I tried everything I could think of, but to no avail.
I can see the desktop computer in my network (when working with the laptop), but the Internet is not accessible.
I understand I have 2 separate connections (the USB Internet and the Wifi router), I just don't seem to be able to integrate both.
Both computers have Win7 Enterprise 64 Bit installed on them.

May I ask, what is this USB "Stick" that allows you to connect to the internet? Is it a USB wireless NIC or a mobile modem with a SIM card inside it?

As for the router I doubt it would work since home routers are designed for ADSL connections only and unless you have a managed router at which you can enter commands into you most likely won't get it to work as a wireless repeater as such.

Does the desktop have a wireless card inside it? There can be software out there in which it can turn your desktop into a wireless router and share its internet connection.

If not then it could be possible to share the connection over an ethernet connection however it is limited to one device at any one time. To do so you will need a crossover cable

Welcome to Seven forums.

Rightly said by Shadowjk: If you have a wireless USB adapter you can create your desktop as Hotspot and then any laptop,desktop or phone with a wireless card can connect to your desktop and use the internet connection.

Let us know if you have wireless USB adapter or USB mobile broadband. So we can advise you further.

In deed, I meant to say a mobile modem with a SIM card inside (over here they call it a USB stick ).
I know about the crossover cable, but the laptop is pretty mobile (moving between the upper and lower floors), so it's not the solution for me.
Regarding the WiFi card, I actually do have a USB Wifi adaptor.
So, how could I use it for this purpose?

It is possible but normally WAN ports are not Ethernet ports Plus there is the issue with authentication as most WAN ports on home routers work with PPPoE which will be looking for a username and password


What you need to do is setup your connection with the mobile service provider and then establish a connection

Once done follow this tutorial to share this connection via WiFi (Wireless adapter) to your laptop and/or other devices

You may wish to try using your router however I am not familiar with that kind of setup therefore I cannot help you there

I don't know if I understand you correctly.
What I did try to do is share the USB Internet connection through the router (had read something about it on the web), by doing the following:
In Network Connections selecting properties for the active USB SIM-based Internet connection, clicking the "Sharing" tab, then checking the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection", selecting the router as the "Home networking connection", and clicking OK.
My problem in this case is getting the following message:
Cannot enable shared access
Error 1060: the specified service does not exist as an installed service
So, I don't know if I should start a new thread to deal with this problem, but...

Thanks for sharing this information. It would be better if you add a wireless card as well on your desktop so that you can create the desktop as a hotspot.

Once desktop is created as hotspot any device whether laptop or smart phone can connect using the hotspot.
