Solved error occurred while reconnecting - The network location cannot be rea

Hello All,

Devices range from laptops -> Workstations -> Server; the operating systems having issues are Win7 machines, and the equipment I'm connecting them to is a Server 2003 Server, Western Digital NAS, Server 2012 Server.

I've recently had an issue with this error on multiple PC's at my shop, and the end result is I cannot connect to any networked device, but I do have internet and I can see the devices in my workgroup under the "Network" drop down in File Explorer. So far the only changes I can see that happened during this problem starting up is Windows updates over the last few weeks.

I already ran the batch file from the sticky provided by "shadowjk" just in case, however I also ran all those commands manually prior to looking here, and the results were the same before and after.

So far I have tried:

Uninstalling / reinstalling all NIC drivers
deleting all managed networks
Removing all antivirus / firewalls
safe mode w/ networking
system restore to a point prior to updates
Changing workgroup to attempt to connect to personal server (server 2012 standard)

This problem still persists, however I have added the following to my troubleshooting:

Configured my user profile on a new computer, it works flawlessly
configured a known working user configuration other than my own on my computer, it does NOT work at all, same problem as mine.
Unhid *Administrator* and performed driver removal and re-install from that user account just in case, no change

Any networking gurus out there, please feel free to ask questions. I'd be happy to produce more information to help solve this problem.

Hi, Sorry you are having issues...

May I ask where this network attached storage is connected to? Is it on the switch/router or is it shared via a server? If a server is that server a domain controller?

Hello Josh,

The NAS is attached to our main switch, which also hosts connections to our DHCP router as well as a server running Windows Server 2003 standard edition.

The switch is:
Cisco SG200-50 Gigabit switch

Server is:
Dell PowerEdge 2800 -- NOT a DC -- File and Print sharing only with 1 managed database "ACT by Sage"

Main router is:
Netgear N600 unfortunately. (I'm working with management to hopefully upgrade this to a more business class router)

PCs with problem:

Samsung Series7 Chronos Laptop Win7 Pro64 -- Fixed by full restore from OEM partition

Dell OptiPlex 3010 Win7 Pro64 -- Still having this issue, hoping to fix without factory reset

When you type the UNC path into Windows explorer do you receive any errors? If so could you please post them.

For example:

\\server\share

Also can I ask, are you able to ping any internal devices on the network? Please test on the NAS as well as other machines such as the server or client machine.

First, I am able to ping all devices by IP and by name from a command prompt.

Second, however, I cannot open the file shares in that traditional way "\\server\share"
and the error message is as follows:

Windows cannot access \\server\share

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 7 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 7 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

Thank you Chev65 for putting some effort forward, and I apologize that I haven't closed this thread yet. I ended up reloading Win7 on the 2 affected computers due to necessity of use. I will save this though, just in case it happens again. We haven't had trouble with any other Win7 systems connecting to our server, just these 2.

Also, I won't be digging around in those settings unless the problem presents itself again since I would like to not potentially cause a new problem, so I'm sorry I won't be able to give you feed back just yet.

Changing those settings won't cause any problems but they will allow you to connect to older servers that didn't come with the updated security policies such as Lanman server authentication and the 128 bit security etc. This is usually the reason for the error message you encountered.
