It´s already a perfect featherlight OS with most drivers supplied. What´s to Lite? That´s gone the way of the Black Viper, which Win7 became.

You're right, maybe cut it down for HTPC use but I'm not inclined to do that to W7. I've already done that to XP, down to about 180MB, just enough to allow capture/record and scheduling to still work, with LAN.
For an 8-second recovery from the occasional local utility drop outs we get around here and if the show is that important to want the missing 8 seconds, there's always downloading afterwards.

EDIT: Though I've been lucky, most drops happen during commercial breaks, which we don't notice..
only when there's a missing scene and that is rare, say 2 times out of 10.

The first major gripe with MS was incorporating IE as the default browser as you well know and why the EU put up a big stink about seeing options in 7! Now they are gearing everything towards the market they see as the most viable for sales being mobile.

If they had played their cards right to start with not making RT a branded OS(Surface only) they could have cophased their mobile tablet line ups to sync with a 7 followup and made 8 another desktop truimph learning from the 7 story instead of fumbling around trying to jam the user up with little or no options.

The workstation is still going to need a workstation type OS and the desktop isn't going away anytime soon! You think engineers and graphic designers will be able to get their works done on tablets or Win phones? NADA! Not happening!

I have IE 10 and you can change it Tools>Internet Options>Programs tab.

In recernt years it was the EU that placed fines on MS over this. Back 11yrs. ago it was the Federal Trade Commission were MS finally agreed to a settlement over IE. You can the posting on that at Microsoft Corporation

All that however had far more to do with the collection of personal data with their Passport privacy policies over simply having IE included however. The EU on the other hand was pursuing the embodiment of choices of browsers during the set up phase not otherwise seen. Microsoft Fined $731 Million by EU Over Browser Accord - Bloomberg You can see how MS still ended up in hot water for something!

Now here's an example of how someone slow at moving up out of XP even to Vista and now 7 finally ended up with 8 until one build was diagnosed to see where the apparent hardware problem was when something simple was the cause.

Upon putting a clean install of 7 on an older case previously running Vista until now I wanted the user to try IE 8 out first then make new restore points inbetween IE 9 and 10 in case he wanted to roll back to the previous version. I had to make to uncheck each of those from the 131 updates. SP1 was already included with the media not requiring a separate install since my friend had finally gotten around to ordering 7 earlier this year.

He certainly doesn't like 8 on a laptop he bought off someone else who was dissatisfied as well when jumping on the Toshiba model to use until the case was running again. He had actually erased the Vista installation for a fast XP install that didn't get activated instead of waiting for me to go through everything when finding the sata cables simply had to be unplugged and replugged back in when the drives were not being seen.

There wasn't anything wrong with either cables or ports while the two drives went from ports #1 and #2 over to #3 and #4 to eliminate any further worries. The board was new last summer. Once I get back to him on the laptop again I will then ask if he wants to see Classic Shell or one of the other Start menu apps put on that. I think that will make it a bit easier for the spouse when taking the 8 laptop over since the old Vista laptop is borrowed by the kids often there.

Reboot speed, even from a hybrid form of hibernate, or whatnot, isn't important to me. My computer is on crunching for scientific research, hosting servers, running programs off a RAM drive, and so on almost 24/7 for weeks at a time. Likewise, I don't really have much need or use for an SSD, though I plan on eventually picking one up. Windows 8, not so much. It's basically a useless OS to me with features that I specifically don't want. Because of those features, I don't want to buy Windows 8 nor support the direction Microsoft is taking the Windows OS. I'm sticking with 7, because it works well for me, and I don't like the GUI of 8. Pretty straightforward rationale as I see it.

If other people like 8, or don't dislike it, then that's their opinion, and they are of course justified in acting accordingly. It also makes sense that the issues other people have with Windows 8 likely wouldn't be issues for them, and therefor those issues might not make sense to them, nor seem justified.

Looks like you modded it to look more like 7 and you're presumably avoiding the Start screen, so that's probably why it doesn't look very 8ish.

I'm not a fan of desktop icons nor a cluttered up taskbar either, but to each their own.

Just for reference, here's a picture of my desktop (I have the background cycle through a bunch of outer space related photographs, mostly nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters). There's also a lot more running than what you can see here.

By the way, nice picture of your family there, I presume.

Yep that is the 7 settings I elected to carry over and it did that automatically and it is using Stardock8 for the 7 look. The desktop icons I clear out from time to time but I do like my taskbar to have that quick start stuff.
Just for clarity when I power on I get that Metro tower thingy > hit the space bar (or any key) > login and then this screen - it takes all of about 8 seconds where my 7 used to take three times longer and the shut down is almost instantaneous.

The 8 screen I can bring in if I go to a corner and click on the settings and stuff but I stick with it as is.

My Sandy Bridge is set up the same way only with an atomic blast for the screensaver and uses the free Classic shell for the same desktop.

Yep that is my son his partner and my grandson.

Having said all that I still have the original 7 on the drives I cloned from so it is just matter of changing them over - don't get me wrong I am more comfortable in 7 just thought I would try the 8 and well the speed made up my mind to keep it on plus I get to use it like 7.
The Ivy I am on right now is a 7 OS as I use it for my pay office access (government) and the miserable toads have only just gone over to 7 from XP so hence everything will not work in IE10

Windows 8.1 Pro RTM 64-bit w/WMC.

No 3rd-party start menu, I just use Quick-Launch.

Still has a few bugs, but I like it better than Windows 8.

Once the Vista days were over I couldn't see much use for having shortcuts clutter the desktop either and simply opted to use the additional Quick Launch toolbar method to keep things organized easily enough in separate catagories. With the 8 CP and RP the Metro was the annoyance while the MS move to avoid further embarrassment was to include the boot direct to desktop option in the 8.1 preview showing they were starting to notice the large volume of complaints coming in!

Before 7 the only clutter you would see on the main taskbar would be from filling the sectional Quick Launch option if not using the addon toolbar method. 7 and 8, 8.1 all share the ability to load up the taskbar too easily without any thought of those. It's still going to be upto the user on how cluttered up things get however regardless of whatever fast ones MS pulls from time to time.

Now as far as clutter on a VM? nonexistant but instead showing a basic desktop strategy ignoring the little reminders VM ware shows in from time to time this would be 8.1 without much on it.

Yeah, but where's the "wiggle room" for more improvement?

Faster load times?
Accommodate new types of hardware?
Eliminate any emulation, just make it run any legacy software/hardware out-of-the-box?
Any suggestions? I just need a base OS (though this W7U was a gift, so didn't cost me)
because I've been using John Haler's PortableApps since it came out, saves me from having to
re-install my most used programs over and over again.

7 just about has it but does have a nice fix without necessarily running the XP VM.

I read Gates' 'time for the kinks to be worked out' as a more PR friendly way of saying that Windows 9 will be a dedicated desktop OS once again. I could be wrong, but the company's chairman and major shareholder isn't going to advise the consumers to avoid upgrading to the current release of their OS as it isn't suited to desktops and hint they should wait for the next incarnation if there isn't going to be significant differences, i.e. no more touchscreen UI on a desktop OS release.
