On XP I always used to bring up the task manager on the remote computer and choose "shut down" or "restart" in one of the toolbar menus, but there's no such menu on 7. Anyone got an idea of how I can shut down or restart a Windows 7 machine via Remote Desktop?

Oddish

I dont use remote desktop, but instead use teamviewer and Im assuming you mean other than start>shutdown>restart, right? Then there is the Contro;>alt>del and right box to shutdown or re-start.

If you click the "Windows Securtiy" button under the start orb (only visible there when you are connect via Remote Desktop) you will be presented with a screen of choices. Click the red icon in the lower right corner of that screen and you will have choices to Restart, Sleep and Shutdown.

The problem with Ctrl + Alt + End is that I have no "Restart" or "Shutdown" options in any of the menus, as I explained in the original post.

What version of Windows 7 are you using? Are you using a Windows 7 machine to remote into another Windows 7 machine? When you used Ctrl-Alt-End, did you look at the lower right hand corner of the screen, where the red shutdown button is located? Click on the arrow, then select shutdown, restart, etc.

What network are you running (Sever 2003, 2008, etc)? Are you using Windows 7 x64 or x86? What version of Windows 7 are you using (RTM, RC, etc)?

AFAIK, the shutdown command requires active directory. For workgroup computers, I suggest using PsTools. Grab them from Microsoft, then write a batch file to shutdown a computer. That's what I do, and it works great. You use the psshutdown.exe file to remotely shut down any computer on your workgroup, like this:

Code:
psshutdown -k -f -t 00 [URL="file://\\nameofpc"]\\nameofpc[/URL]

There are tutorials on the 'net on how to use psshutdown. You can also open a cmd prompt, navigate to the PsTools directory, and type psshutdown ? for a complete list of commands.
