Solved Cannot run any 32 bit application: error 0xc0000005

Hi. When I try to run any 32 bit application I get the following message:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.

The problem started to occur after using Windows Update yesterday. I have tried to use System Restore to return my system to before the update, this was unsuccessful. I also cannot access my installed updates in the control panel, so I can't uninstall the updates. This has occurred once before and I couldn't find a solution so I had to reinstall Windows, but I'd prefer to find a permanent solution so I don't have to do that every time I use Windows Update.

64 bit programs still work, which is why I am able to post this thread (I am using a 64 bit browser).

Specifically? The restore started, and pc rebooted only to tell you it was unsuccessful and no changes were made? If so, try running a system restore from Safe Mode

When Safe mode loads the command prompt type

rstrui.exe

Again, what exactly? if you go to

Start> In search box type Programs and features> Enter> View installed updates in upper left> Then?

Perhaps you can do it through the command prompt if needed

Let's start there, the error is a memory access error, so can have many causes, but your supposition it was an update is most likely. I would concentrate of getting a system restore to work, followed by deleting from command prompt if necessary. we can deal with not being able to access installed updates if needed.

Thanks Guy, this method worked. I'm not sure this got to the root of the problem, however. Why do certain updates cause this problem? Does this show something else is wrong with my system? Do I have to avoid particular updates from now on, and which ones? Wouldn't skipping these updates affect my system?

There have been problem windows updates several times recently. There are also times individuals have issues with certain updates. Every PC has a different configuration, with so many variables, it's hard to say why some have issues. I would still run the SFC and see if it finds any issues. You'd be wise to look into a system imaging program and a 2nd hard drive as insurance in case of major issues like this in the future.

You certainly need most updates. Your issue right now for instance is likely only one update was the cause, but which one? You can install them one by one and see which one causes the problem again (if it does). But then you have to restore again, and try all the others but that one. You could hide that update, but it is not the best option. Knowing which update might explain it if others are having issues with it, but if not, it would be very hard to discover why it caused you issues.

It could well be some software you install always, as you say you had a similar problem and reinstalled Windows before. However, that issue may have just been similar, and unrelated. Exasperating to be sure.

Run the SFC and see if it finds and fixes any issues. If it says it could not fix anything, post the sfcdetails.txt mentioned in the tutorial in my post above. A Guy

I know that all the updates going wrong seem to be related to updates to the .NET framework. I'm not sure what that means except that if I avoid those updates my system works fine. Obviously, that's not a good long term solution.

Looks like no erros found on the scan. Yes, .net updates can be problematic. Many skip them when they are 1st offered until they can see if they are going to cause issues. I myself take all the other updates, reboot, then take the .net updates. of course I make several system images every weekend
