Don't want to remove programs from CCleaner startup again and again

Hello everybody,

can you help me with my problem, please. How can I manage startup programs in Windows 7 in an efficient way?

I've been using CCleaner to prevent some programs to load at startup. I have even deleted some items from the startup list of CCleaner. But there are still some programs that add to the startup list again every time I run them. These programs are iTunes, microTorrent etc. As a consequence I have to delete their entries again and again from the CCleaner startup list.

Is there a better way to solve my problem? Is there a handy utility that can block forever some programs to add to the startup list?

Click on the Start button rb:

Type in msconfig and open it.

Click on the Startup tab, then uncheck the programs you don't want to start with Windows.

Click the Start button and in the search box type "msconfig" without the quotes. Right click the msconfig.exe at the top of the windows that opens and choose "Run as administrator".
In the window that opens click on the Sytsrt Up tab and uncheck the programs you don't want to start on start up. Click apply. If that doesn't clear them all then openeach program that does not conform and get into it'e "prperties" or "Settings" and see if there is a box there that says something like "Always start when Windows is started" you can uncheck

BTW Boozad, don't you find having all those progs open at start up slow you boot up time. I only have My A/V running. Anything else I open when i need it! But then I'm a Gregrocker student

Yes, that may be a part of solution. What if I start a program manually? I am talking about programs like iTunes, microTorrent etc. They add to the startup again and again every time I start them manually. It is difficult for me to configure each and every program separately in order to prevent them to add to startup. Is there a handy utility that can solve my problem?

Derek and I both crossed with you Boozad. Both gettng slow on the typing front. The extra bit i added pplies to Team Viewer and Skype to my ceratin knowledge. I didn't know the two programs the OP mentioned. Well one I knew but ignored it

Itunes is famous for this. My solution was to always uninstall the program that causes this behavior.
Try it yourself, install itunes and uncheck it from startup. After the next 2 or 3 restarts, it comes back and adds itself again. Adobe does this as well.

I personally recommend uninstalling any program that does this and get something else/a replacement.

NOTE:
The best way to stop a program from starting up is from within the
program itself. Although adobe and itunes are missing these options. Which is why you might have to use a program from the ones below.
Contrary to what many say, MSCONFIG Startup is not a good place for
this very reason.
Some applications will recreate those entries if the entries are
deleted.
Go to the program itself and look for something under settings like "Load at
startup", "Start at boot" etc.,
Disable it from the application.
MSCONFIG Startup is intended as a troubleshooting tool and as a method
of permanently disabling an application from starting. (But it does not always work.)

Andrew I was paying attention, the OP states he was using CCleaner to stop programs starting at startup. That's why he was advised by three others to use msconfig.

I've had iTunes installed on my last three PCs, still have it on the current two rigs. I've taken it out of startup in msconfig on all three rigs and to this day it's never put itself back in there. I'm happily starting manually whenever I'm forced to use the Godawful thing.
This was why I recommended the OP removes it in msconfig, because through experience on three different rigs with three different versions of W7 Pro iTunes has never put itself back in the startup menu when disabled through msconfig. I wouldn't tell him something works if it hadn't worked for me over and over again.

Unfortunately for iPad/iPhone/iPod users there is nothing else to use for synching your device.

No, not msconfig. You guys aren't getting it - you can disable startup directives with msconfig or ccleaner or what have you, but there are certain programs that will simply restore them each time they're run.

You have to go into the options for each such program and find the setting for launching things at boot/startup - it'll usually be in an unobvious place.

iTunes has never started at Startup for me after removing it from msconfig no matter how many times I run it.

After unchecking a program in msconfig (startup) and rebooting ... look in "Services" by typing services.msc.
See if any of the programs are set to 'automatically'. Right click the program, choose properties.
If it's set to automatic, click the drop down bar, set it to 'manual', then stop then service. Apply and OK your way out.

As mentioned in the post above, indeed check in Computer Management for services related to the programs. If the case, set them to manual or disabled. That should fix it. Good luck.

If a program turns itself back on after being deselected in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after hiding all MS Services) then as stated it may need to be turned off at startup in the program Preferences - it may be listed under Updater.

You don't need anything to start with Win7 except your AV, any sync, gadgets or stickies you're using. All others are freeloaders on resources and probably spying.

• Run Autoruns as Administrator
• At the top go to Options> Filter Options...
  • Check these:
    
    
• Click the little floppy icon at the top to before! any changes are made to save a copy of the original startup in case something has been broken in the process

• Find the entry(ies) you want to get rid of, uncheck them and simply exit the program and reboot the PC.

   Warning

Disabling the wrong entry may result in Windows not booting properly or not at all!
Make sure you know what you're disabling.

Side note;
Some programs are known to add a run registry key at shutdown (viruses do this as well).
I'm not saying you should but one way to break this mechanism is to reset via the front-panel button.
