Hell both of my 7970's wouldn't fetch a grand that must be one (RAD) as in cool 660 lol

I destroyed the 3770, the die was fine, put it together and hung with no POST with the RAM LED staying on. Tried another CPU and it worked fine.
Examining the delidded 3770K I saw a gouge in the PCB with copper showing through. The corner of my razor blade cut into it and cut or grounded out several of the tiny copper traces embedded in the PCB. Can't take a pic, the area is about 0.2mm or less but I can clearly see the copper traces under magnification.

Dammit!

Looking back, the gouge is visible in the original pic.

Humm...

Have you tried to put some nail polish on the gouge to isolate it? Also some seems using paper and thermal paste for it not to conduct. Readed some, and quite some persons have fried the board & dimms not insulating the scratches.

Look on the bright side and I do mean bright side I read that Intel will accept de-lided CPU's and will replace the one you messed up

I read dozens have done this I would look into this if this is accurate all isn't lost

NoN from what I can see the conductors are broken and crossed over each other.

Tommy, that would be a plus if they take delidded CPUs back.

Gary, I would sure give it a try. You can get some permetex at an autoparts store. That's used to make head gaskets for cars. It looks exactly like what Intel uses. And Solar is right, I've seen several on OCN say they RMA'd a delided CPU.

ha no, i was having stuttering problems in all games, and finally came to a conclusion that its either my mobo, gpu, or psu. i tested to make sure all components were getting power, then i realized my NB was INCREDIBLY hot to where i couldn't touch it. so i sent my mobo back. took about 3 weeks to get it back, and it was still getiing REALLY hot, so i sent it back again along with my gpu. its been about 3 weeks, and its going to ship by end of this week. i should get it back by next week. the 4th week on the same RMA! but anyway, thanks to Solar for helping me figure it all out.

They will rma delided ones ... Gary, exactly how did you do the delid?

A single edge razor blade.

Permatex won't re-attach the severed wires or separate the ones that are touching.

No, but it will put the IHS back on and look just like Intel's job.

Without numbers on the IHS, I can't start a RMA. The box numbers won't work. Clicking a link on Intel's site for info got me an error saying the service isn't available, 404.

You're a brave man Gary especially with the luck you've been having lately
As Paul said, Gutted for ya mate.

If you plan on doing it again, maybe leave the lapping untill you know if it works or not.

Thanks Paul and Ryan, I was a dumb ass for trying it in the first place. Fortunately it was a used one I got for $150 so not out $340 anyway.
Steve gave me a number to call and check on RAM with Intel.
