Just bought a new soundblaster 5.1 VX but no sound...

I recently upgraded my old video card to a new HDMI capable video card, however this overrode my old onboard audiochip and there was nothing that could be done to fix it. So I caved in and went out and bought a new SB 5.1 VX soundcard. I've now managed to get the 'speakers' playback device in my playback device listing, but even when music or video is playing, the levels stay flat panned dead. Nothing in the menu of the audio control panel fixes it and the drivers that came on the CD are apparently more up to date than the version offered on the website.

Anyone have any suggestions to get this problem solved? I'm itching to have sound again.

Keoraf, it would have been better to start a new thread than resurrect a 2011 thread.

You failed to fill in the My System Specs so we have no idea what hardware we are dealing with. We can only guess.

Please fill in the specs and more information is needed to try and help you.

In general, if you have a system with HDMI and you have a cable connected to the HDMI, the system will default to the HDMI as the "default audio playback device" and there will not be any PC speaker sound. The "speakers" need to be set as the default audio playback device to have sound from the PC's speakers.

Im so sorry to re-open such an old thread, but i read Synica had the same prob with the audio and video, and she owns the same soundcard aswell. She even mentioned that she solved the problem. So i just wanted to know what i have to do to solve this problem!
I've filled my system specs already!

If this is a custom built PC, what is the motherboard?

Still can't talk in specifics, all we know is the 5.1 soundblaster is not working. But if you are using a separate sound card, you must disable any on-board (on the motherboard) sound in the BIOS or there can be conflicts and nothing works.

Trying to help you but still have to just guess.

Motherboard is Intel S5000XSL, its not a custom built PC. I've tried all suggestions available on the internet. My PC don't have any on board soundcard, just an onboard videocard, but its disabled.
Just wanted to know how Synica solved this problem, because my prob is just the same as hers!
Anyway, thanks for your reply!!!

In many cases, when someone posts and resolves the problem, they never check back or come back to the forum unless they need help with another problem.
