Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right section but anyway, I'm wondering if its possible to turn drag/drop into cut.
For example: when I have to folders open next to each other, and I select a bunch of files from the left folder, and I drag / drop them to the right folder, it copies the files...

I was wondering if its possible to change that, because its pretty annoying. And as far as I remember, vista always used to move them, instead of copying...

Thanks

Im assuming you mean besides right-click>move to, right?

Hi Necrowizard and welcome to Se7en Forums

Instead of left clicking and dragging, right click and drag. When you release the mouse button you will be given a choice whether you want to move the file(s) or just simply copy them.

Thanks, that worked

Hold SHIFT while click and drag. Menu will pop up asking which action to apply.

That worked better...
Drag - Hold shift - drop, and its moved instead of copied, no menu at all :)

Actually, I did test to confirm. But after reading your comment, I had to go back and test again. I could not duplicate your result. And then I realized that muscle memory was in control - I was right clicking.

One of the nice aspects of Windows going back a few generations - so many different GUI/cmd methods of doing the same thing.

i like to think that the shift key 'shifts' the files from one place to the other...:)

There are 3 functions of drag+drop using extra keys in the manner above:
  • SHIFT - move the file/folder.
  • CTRL - copy the file/foloder.
  • ALT - create a shortcut to the file.

Oh btw, my original question was if you could change the drag-drop action...

So instead of holding shift, or right click drag-dropping, is there a way to change the default left-click drag option from copying to moving?

i don't believe you can.

when dragging files within the same partition, move is the default action.

when dragging files from one partition to another, copy is default.

if you want to chose 'on the fly', use the right mouse button.

if you always want to move, use the shift-key modifier.

No, not to the knowledge of many. That is not to say it is impossible, just that no method has been discovered and published to date. See this thread for possible alternatives or enhancements not outlined here. There are a few tools listed there.

Actually a method to accomplish this HAS been discovered, at least when using NTFS partitions. I doubt I'm the only one to discover this little trick: junctions or the "new" symbolic links. If you want to be able to LEFT-drag-and-drop to initiate a move from one partition to another, create a junction or symlink in the source partition that points to either a specific folder in the destination partition, or even the root folder of the destination. This can be done very easily, and further managed very easily, with a tool like Link Shell Extension.

Then, when you want to be able to very quickly drag-and-drop files between those locations, you can now drag them into the junction or symlink instead, and Windows itself will be none the wiser that the files are actually moving to another partition (the filesystem handles it and abstracts that detail). I now use junctions and symlinks almost as widely as Windows 7 itself, including several for exactly this purpose.

Another similar method that occurred to me, though I haven't tried it, would be to use Disk Management to create a "mount point" for the destination in a subfolder of the source; I believe this could be created in addition to an existing drive letter for the destination. Again, it's likely to be specific to NTFS.
