Yep Bill the old tester came up better than I thought and the only pulling on Ivy's reins is that CPU. I ma just wondering if I had an i7 K of some sort in there what I could stretch out of this old girl.

No mate but when I retire I am going to do one more major build as well as a present for my gardener mate who doesn't have a lot of dough and is pretty crippled up with arthritis. I shall use the same gear but with an i7 3770K if I can get the board as Z77's out here from my supplier are less than eight choices

I have been watching the Haswell saga but like a TV soapy eh? I couldn't put up with all that nonsense.

Yes mate sure did and the tester came up no slouch either seeing it has only DDR2 RAM.

Thing is that flipping EVO I got i think is a lemon mate - well you know what I mean so I am going to give it one more wipe a clone and see what happens but I know the thing stopped the fist time with what it called a broken pipe?? To be brutally honest it never seemed as fast as the straight 840 which is back in of course and like a rocket.

Yeah, DDR2 can give you a decent score if overclocked, see my WEI that I posted some days ago.

But, when it comes to actually pushing data around, DDR2 just ain't all that anymore.

The BIOS has to have a setting for it, usually called DRAM frequency or by boosting the base clock frequency. Then you may have to loosen timings, make the numbers bigger by one, ex: from 10-11-11 to 11-12-12, and maybe a voltage increase of 0.05V or 0.10V.

Messing with it can make it non-booting though so you'd have to turn the PSU off and re-try.

Bill worse still mate it could have been a teenage glitch what an awful thought. Driving home this afternoon and some "P" plate (provisional driver) came past me like I was in second gear and I'm on 110kph!! Young girl not a clue!!

Overclocking the RAM on my Gigabyte board wasn't too difficult. It has dual BIOS, the user has access to the primary BIOS only so if the settings cause a no-boot situation, the board will use the secondary BIOS to boot, allowing the user to change his settings.

In the first picture, CPU Host Frequency = FSB.

In the second picture, System Memory Multiplier (MCH Strapping) sets the RAM speed relative to the FSB.

Memory Frequency is showing the default frequency (800) and the actual frequency (1099).

In my case, I got lucky and the standard timings (5, 5, 5, 18) work fine.


I could probably tweak it a bit more but there's only so much performance to be found in obsolete hardware.

That is true.

If you can find the sweet spot, however, it will make a noticeable difference.

For example, running IBT standard, I got this:

FSB 400MHz CPU Multi 9.5 RAM Multi 2.00 = test run time 257.85 sec

FSB 400MHz CPU Multi 9.5 RAM Multi 2.66 = test run time 241.26 sec


RAM timing remained the same, 5, 5, 5, 18.


Currently running:
FSB 412MHz CPU Multi 9.5 RAM Multi 2.66 = test run time 233.36 sec

System gets unstable (IBT fails) if the FSB is raised above 415MHz. Fails to boot if the CPU or RAM multi is raised. This is as good as it gets...

With Sandy and Ivy Bridge the BCLK (A.K.A., FSB) generally tops out at less that 104.

Hum have set the timing to 6 6 6 17 and I don't see any appreciable difference the WEI for example is just the same on 5.9. Mind you I didn't touch the volts on that setting.
