Service pack backup files has been an option all along, but good you found it. That's a big amount recovered!

This post shook the memory cells loose. A real Duh! moment. I also noticed that the removal created a system restore point.

I think that's a good thing in case you need one of those files or have issues.

I've run this clean up twice each time removing ~250MB of updates. Within a few minutes I'm offered 15-16 updates dating back to July 2012.

I was offered 1 older update after running the cleanup tool.
I installed the update without any problems.

Anyway I ran the tool and haven't been offered any older updates as well. We'll see.

If Britton30 is odd, then I'm really out there. Neither of my computers show any updates to delete.

Edit: Oopsie! I wasn't running it as an administrator. I was able to clean up 1.2GB on my desktop. I'm too lazy to dig out and set up my notebook right now but I may be using it this weekend so, if I think of it, I'll try it again then.

I certainly wasn't aware of this ... so thanks for posting. I got almost 4GB back!

Especially since it is from MS it isn't something like registry cleaners etc. that potentially ruin your system.

MS really got their act together with W7 to have sufficccient (and safe) "onboard" cleaning tools to not need 3rd-party tools.

I'm surprised W8 seems to have this feature in a complicated form (entering command). One more reason to stay with W7

I like Win 7 too but I have to nix this particular reason for staying on it... Win 8 has this feature both in Disk Cleanup and as an automated task set up in Task Scheduler that runs without user intervention in regular intervals.

I finally ran it on my notebook last night and got 2.4GB back. I cheated a bit; I ran it, then shut my notebook down for the night (I was pooped), then let it finish this morning when I booted it up.

378MB on a week, if that, install. Still , happy to get it as I've loaded up my C drive this time. Well ...... for me anyway
