I thought it could do good to add some more info to the thread.

@mitchell65, there is a connection. That link probably refers to a workaround some guys use to get back missing sound from some apps, something more or less common for some. It has to do with some broken info recorded on the registry, more specifically in the same root pointed by the OP.

@drugo, although the application might be portable, you still have Windows and lots of other software which could be managing the registry, including related actions pertaining to the portable software. For example, Windows Volume Mixer keeps a record (on registry) of the volume level of all the applications which might have needed it (or just "connected" to the sound services) in any given moment. It was certainly the case every time you used GoldWave.
