I'm using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and Stressing for 1 Hour would that be enough time to deem it to be stable so i can find the lowest voltage and settings before stressing for 8 Hours

Thanks for replies in advanced

Stress testing can be tricky. Some use Prime, some IBT. You can pass one but not the other sometimes. I have not tried the stress test from XTU. I use IBT (Intel Burn Test). That puts stress on your cpu real hard. Then if you pass that, try to do other things, like your favorite game.

I will stress test with Intel Burn Test and if it passes that, I will stress with AIDA64 for at least 12 hours IF I'm happy with those settings. What you can do is find where it is unstable by using Intel Burn Test and then bump it up just a tad and then do the 12+ hour stress test.

Yes, just take it slow and go down in small increments until it won't pass Intel Burn Test, then bump it back up until it will, then let it run either Prime95 or AIDA64 for 12 hours.

This is the one area where I fail - stress testing for long periods of time. I usually go an hour, and if all is good I call it a day. I'm also of the attitude that there's really nothing in normal everyday use to push the system like these stress tests do so I see no need to run for them 12+ hours. On the other hand I don't try to push my system to the edge so my method works for me.

My backup system is a Q6600 (2.4gig) system which has been running at an overclocked speed of 2.83 gig since 07... on air. When I first stress tested it using prime 95, I just let it run for an hour. That's it. Yeah, it wasn't a huge overclock, but 7 years, and still running. That'll work :)

I tend to agree with this stress testing for hours is like leaving a magnifying glass on a ant that has already burned a hour should be a very good indication that your system is stable

Honestly running it that long and hard would have the reverse effect i don't know who made the stress testing rule but your machine will not even touch the degree of stress that a simulation program is providing if your machine holds up for a hour without going Apesh*t i would call it a day because let's face if it was really a instability issue it would jump off in the first 2 minutes if not less

And definitely within an hour. At 12+ hours all you're doing is creating a blow dryer.

My two cents.

I would think after that amount of time spent doing that it failed because of overuse that is how i would look at it

8 to 9 hours is massive stress on any system

I have found that OCCT really maxes out my PC real hard. It has options for CPU stress test ( 3 test modes for CPU stress test, Small, Medium And large data set. It also contains CPU Linpack stress test, it has a GPU3D stress test and even a PSU stress test. Out of all the stress tests I have tried, If you can hold stable for 10 mins on this one, it's just like going for 24 hours on prime95. This is just my opinion. And watch those temps!, especially the NB. Home

Link included, the one that says Home in blue above^ , Almost forgot, the best part, after each test, you get a txt report of each piece of hardware tested, the volts, etc etc...it's like 10 or 14 different reports with very accurate details.

Gotta have at least 1!
Except for the fact that I've had Prime95/AIDA64 fail in hour 8, 9 and 10........I agree....

I would think after that amount of time spent doing that it failed because of overuse that is how i would look at it

8 to 9 hours is massive stress on any system

You aren't going to overuse one of these new CPU's. The old Intel CPU's would shut down if temps got to hot, and the new ones will throttle their performance to protect themselves. It was simply a case of it not being stable and screwing up a calculation.......it just happened to be several hours into it.

Prime 95 is not doing the same calculations over and over to stress your system. It does a variety and it takes many hours to get full coverage with different patterns of stress. I believe this is why ppl run it for a long time, to get that full coverage, and why you may see a failure some hours into it - because p95 hit a pattern your system is unstable against.

My understanding is that Prime95 runs numerous large or small Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs). These are very defined computational algorithms. Some RAM testing is also carried out. If you get an error I'd also be running MEMTEST86 or the like.
