It's near christmas mate, alot of people on here have families and full time jobs, What program are you using to monitor the speed of the CPU?

None at all. Impatient are you?
The CPU doesn't run at full speed all the time and may clock down as low as 800MHz, my Haswell did.

Fire up your virus scanner and CPUz and see what it does then.

Change the BIOS clock ratio to 42 see how it goes. hopefully they already set the volts and other things.

Know what you're doing or else...

Hi I'm new to this site and also new to overclocking. I've got a i7 haswell i7 4770k with the Gigabyte Z87X-d3h motherboard and my PC was advertised as OC to 4.2GHz but it isn't running at that speed. What settings do I have to change in the BIOS?

Does the voltage need to be on a certain setting to support a overclock speed of 4.2GHZ? I've had it on 4.2GHz by the method I said above and when I boot up and get on the log on screen, the audio of the windows sound sounds all crackled when on 4.2GHz. That's why I ask there must be something else to change like voltage or something else.

Seeing some of the questions being asked, I would highly suggest you research overclocking before attempting to do so. Overclocking entails experience, trial & error, the right components, and a bit of luck all tied in with a bit of knowledge.

Knowledge and comfort ability with basic BIOS settings with regards to OC'ing is a must, particularly basics in voltage/settings.

The biggest issue with overclocking, besides stability is heat!.... this is the biggest issue most overclockers face, and the biggest factor contributing to heat is voltage. Understand that, and you have a big hand up on overclocking.

The other part you have to understand is that every CPU of the same ilk isn't capable of gaining or sustaining the same speed. In sort not every 4770K for example will hit 4.7/8 gig.

With that, understand not everyone's OC settings will work for you as components, HW/SW, temps, and conditions will be the same for everyone.

I bring these up to say while we can give tips here and there, the overall package is going to be based on your knowledge and/or understanding of overclocking based on your system and needs.

So yeah, I'd suggest you visit some forums dedicated to overclocking to get an idea of what's involved and what is takes to get to where you want.

You could check out sites like

- Tweak Town's GIGABYTE forums
- The Gigabyte Z87/Haswell Overclocking(OC) Guide (this one is a bit long and technical, but..)
- Intel Motherboards - Overclockers Forums (great general OC forum)
- And lastly, our very own forums here - PC Custom Builds and Overclocking - Windows 7 Help Forums

Good luck :)

BTW I've got a Gigabyte G1 Sniper 5 MB with a i7-4770K, though I've not overclocked my system yet. And yes, I have some experience, but not on this platform (haswell/Z87 MB) yet.

It's not a nightmare, you just have to do some research and ask lots of questions. You've already asked some questions, now you just have research and ask more, and then from there, take baby steps.... and research and ask more questions. Pretty soon, you'll be able to tell the bull from the facts.

As for deleting this thread... while you can't delete the responses, you can certainly delete yours. BUT.... you might as well leave it as this could turn out not only helping you, but others in your situation. Plus as you learn, you can always come back and input what you learned or didn't. It helps everyone involved.

Good luck.
