Solved Outlook 2007 prompting for password

Outlook 2007, 12.0.6680-5000, SP3 12.0.6683.5000
This is a simple home PC, single user with nothing but a cable modem between me and the internet.

I have two mail accounts, one POP roadrunner account and one IMAP AOL account.
It has periodically started asking for my AOL password, and changing the PW would solve it for months before it started again. This time it just isn't satisfied with that solution and asks frequently, but not every time, it automatically gets mail. Sometimes it appears it's trying the wrong PW and I re-enter it and it's okay for a few downloads. Other times, I just click "Remember" and it's happy for an hour or two. It is set to download every 15 minutes. The Roadrunner account never has this issue.

After searching, the best reply I can find is this:

It refers to Vista and XP, so I hesitated to start following the steps. Is there a more current fix? Or a better idea?

I wouldnt hesitate to follow those steps; because even though it says its for Vista and XP; the principles should be generally the same as well. Especially because it says its for Vista also; as Vista is generally the same as Windows 7 with a few minor exceptions.

That was an easy enough fix... except it didn't fix it. It behaved for about an hour and went back to its old tricks.
I still get this prompt:

It never asks for my roadrunner password, just AOL.

I use Outlook 2010 and have seen this annoying issue for a IMAP AOL (AIM) account the last couple of days...
I wonder if something doesn't trigger in AOL requiring a "security confirmation" periodically...
I logged into my AOL (AIM) email account in the web/online page and clicked through the "security/confirmation".
Since I did that, I haven't been prompted for the PW in Outlook...

Mine suddenly started cooperating after initially acting up. I got up this morning and it's been downloading mail all night without a hitch. Who knows. But if it starts up with the prompts again, I'll take a look and do what you did.

I'll give it 48 hours and mark the thread solved if it keeps working.

Great, hopefully it keeps working without an unneeded PW prompt...
Maybe they fixed some "2014 New Year" glitch ...

Last night I realized that when this first started, and I changed my AOL password(which has fixed it in the past), I forgot to change it on my phone too. So all that time I was getting the Outlook prompts on my PC, my phone was pinging AOL with the wrong PW. Maybe that's what was upsetting it so much. I'm new to phone e-mail. It was after I fixed that, that the prompts stopped.

So, let's all give a big DUH! for me. Maybe that's all it was. Seems fine now. I'm going to call it solved. Thanks for your replies. See y'all next time I have a problem.

Yea, I've been there and done things like that ssooo many times...
Don't feel bad about it, that's how we all learn best - from our mistakes and trying to find a fix ...
