Hello everyone. I purchased one of the $49 W7 Home Premium upgrades when they were available. However, It's still unclear to me whether or not I will be able to install this thing without a pre-existing OS installation on my hard drive. Can anyone give me a definitive yes or no? Thanks.

I know that's not true and that's also not what I'm asking.

I'm asking if I can install the Upgrade version on a brand new, fresh hard drive without having to install either XP or Vista first.

i don't think you can - that's why it's called an 'upgrade' version.

If you have a Vista DVD you could perform a custom install which is in essence a clean install ;)

(i'm still looking into this though :p)

You could with the Windows XP 'upgrade' version, and you could with the Windows Vista 'upgrade' version with a double-install.

But I'm not interested in anyone thinks. Sorry to be a jerk, but this is what every forum tells me. I think this... I think that... "it's called an upgrade for a reason" etc... and I just want to know before it's too late to cancel my pre-order. Can I or can't I?

Thanks again.

So you mean I could insert my Vista DVD in the 7 install procedure a la Windows 98 to XP upgrade without actually having to install Vista first? That's what I'm hoping for.

There is an old saying where there is the will there is the way. Why not google it yourself? My thoughts arre of course you can. Take them as you like or not

As I understand it, the product id of an existing XP or Vista has to be picked up. And that could happen from either an existing installation on the HDD or the installation disk to be inserted during the W7 installation process. It figures that they want to make sure that you are eligable for an upgrade and have paid your dues for a prior OS.

Right. I have the full versions of both XP and Vista, with legitimate serial numbers. It's just insane that they expect me to go back and install Vista before installing W7 every time I get a new hard drive or run DBAN.

How can you upgrade something to a fresh EMPTY harddrive, there has to be something there in the first place to UPGRADE it to.
And if you had a Premium upgrade disc surely it is obvious
that you can only Upgrade it to another PREMIUM OS, and not another
Version of Windows.

Perhaps you're new to Windows and installation procedures, but you could use the Windows XP upgrade edition to perform a clean install on a fresh hard drive. You just needed to insert a 98/2000 CD during the installation process.

The idea of being able to install Windows on a clean hard drive using upgrade media is NOT a new and radical idea. This is how it's always been done. Vista changed the game with the double-install bug. I'm hoping that Windows 7 goes back to "normal."

And if you had a Premium upgrade disc surely it is obvious
that you can only Upgrade it to another PREMIUM OS, and not another
Version of Windows.

You must be referring to in-place upgrades, which couldn't be more irrelevant to this conversation.

If you already have the RC installed, MS has said that you will be able to do the double install only once... after that you will need to insert a disc with a qualifying version in order for it to work. So, be sure to image your drive immediately after activating..

I hope this answers your questions...

Still no definitive answer for the workarounds to clean install on blank drive from upgrade media.

There must be a way - MS just isn't letting on - yet.

Well I suppose I still have a month or so to sit on it until I need to cancel my pre-order. It's unfortunate that there's still no answer at this point though. Perhaps Microsoft doesn't even know how they want to handle this yet.

With the upgrade media, your $49.95 version, you have to run setup and install from
within an activated legal copy of Vista or XP. You must click custom install if your OS is WinXP. If Vista, you can upgrade. Once you click custom install, you can re partition, format etc. and then install Win 7.

You are no longer allowed to put in an old disk for validation. That will NOT work.
Also the work around from Vista will not work as the requirement is that the
OS you are currently using MUST BE ACTIVATED. This is a change from Vista days.

What is still up in the air is how to re install after a hard drive failure.
