Solved Is my laptop running HOT!

Recently after downloading MS latest updates my laptop start up has slowed down.
I checked msconfig startups and only have 4 in the start up so then used Speecy to check
my system.

Here is a summary snip...



So my question is my laptop running too hot?
If so how do I reduce temps?

The reason I posted the snip is after I downloaded the latest Windows updates my start up has been really slow.
I checked msconfig and start showed only 4 items loading at start up then checked the temps.

Just trying to rule out items that may have caused the slow startup.

Hi Dennis:

I always elevate the back of a laptop which feels hot about 1/2-1" to get air under it better.

Check where the vents are and make sure they're never blocked. I'm sure you know to never put it on a bed or pillow because they stop the air flow. Look inside vents to see if dust is obvious.

You can use a plastic vacuum attachment to suck any visible dust out after unplugging, removing battery and draining power via holding the Power button. Don't do this on a carpeted floor.

Most laptops have a section in their Manual or via google search for how to clean that model or line.

When a PC runs hot I install Core Temp (avoiding any sneakware) then in Settings put temps in the System Tray to Start with Windows where you can monitor them. It will change temp color if it overheats, and can even be configured to Hibernate after 30 second warning if it reaches the max. It seems to know the CPU for each model, but I'd also google the temp max for your CPU. 44c may not be too hot, though your perception is also important.

If you think this was caused by the Updates then I'd look at the CPU to see what's running it up. Some like Process Explorer to tame svchost.exe - Advanced topics | Defensive Computing - CNET News. Others prefer Process Monitor - Demo YouTube.

If you confirm your suspcions that an Update has caused this by pegging your CPU then you can run System Restore to before it was installed to see if it resolves it. Then try to isolate which Update of the group caused it by installing them singly until you find it, Restore again and start a ticket with Windows Updates email Support and our Updates forum.

I do find the motherboard a little hot and one of the storage drive for a laptop. I'll tend to tell you to have a cooler first underneath and try to search which Kbs have done that, if before you was monitoring better cooling temps.

Ps: will you roll back one by one ones kbs, can perhaps give some help.

Anything under 70C is comfortable. With your temps I would not worry.

The slow boot is another problem. What are the 4 startups. Even one can slow things down - if it is a real bugger. But as NoN says, a roll-back may not be a bad idea. Then install the updates one by one and see what happens. Maybe there is one that causes the problem.

On the temps Dennis, 50C is the max a HDD should see, above that and they can degrade fast.

that were not loaded.

The restore worked to some extent but couldn't go back to earlier date where it ran great.

Forgot to tell you I have laptop sitting on a USB connection with fans underneath the laptop.
It's a small laptop size that I sit the laptop on which then sits on my legs which is supposed to help control the heat.

Will get back to all of you later as I need to get Donna ready for bed.

An observation: Two of the updates failed and also were previously cancelled.
KB2862330: USB drivers -> MS13-081: Description of the security update for USB drivers: October 8, 2013
KB2913602: Kernel mode drivers -> MS14-003: Vulnerability in Windows kernel-mode drivers could allow elevation of privilege: January 14, 2014
KB29134431 had failed on 1/15, but was successful on a subsequent check for updates.

I understand you have restored back to 1/14 and are in the process of
uninstalling WU installed between 1/15 and 1/17

It might be that the rise in temps was caused by the failed installs. The incomplete hardware USB update would be my guess.

There are a few members that are hiding KB2862330 in WU, although I think it's a misread of the KB article. http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ere-we-again-jpatch-tuesday-any-problems.html

I had no problems with the Tuesday update, but just so you are aware and don't think something is amiss, the update boots, runs to 30%, reboots, pauses at 32%, then jumps to 100% and Windows starts normally.

There is also a caveat in the KB article to disconnect all USB devices before installing KB2862330 , but I believe that and the known issues apply to the original KB release in Oct., not to this Jan release.
I did not disconnect any USB devices and it seems to be fine after a few days running.

Anyway, just an observation. Good Luck.

Looks the last patch tuesday didn't help you much....failed on install.

Check whenever this article ID is on your system (Article ID: 2533552) but i doubt you missed this one that came from Windows Update.
Its the one needed to install Oct 2013 and January 14, 2014 kb 2862330.

Also unplug as much Usb devices from the laptop before install last update even if its not really require with kb 2862330.

I would try to run System Update Readiness Tool once and see in the CheckSur log.

And run Sfc/ Scannow on reboot.

Ran sfc /scannow and found problems which it repaired. Rebooted and ran it again where everything was ok.
Only have 2 USB connected...one for mouse and other for cooling fans.
Disconnected fans and downloading one file at a time. Will get back when all updates are loaded.

Tried to download System Update Readiness Tool( took a long time as it was a big file) Once downloaded I tried running it and it got to 90% and seemed to hang up. It stated it was complete but bar showed different.
Will run it again and get back later.

I would try this Hotfix from MS which fixed upon correction partition table on mine. Then re-ran SFC /Scannow on reboot finishing the fixing after installing the hotfix.

As for System Update Readiness Tool, yes it does takes a while for it to run as it checks all the updates installed. You shouldn't have that stall to run it.

Edit: I will be gone for a while so just post your response and I will get back to you.

SURT takes on mine sometimes up to 15mns, looking freezed then in a sudden the green bar appears and finishing the job.

As for the hotfix it should install upon the pop-up windows with no particular probs, a reboot might be require to run command at the next session sfc /scannow.

I though better fix some little probs before installing patch tuesday failed. Hope you do not mind.
