first we need your system specs (lower left corner) so we know what hardware you have. We also need 32 bit or 64? clean install or upgrade.

We also need to know if the game is 32 bit or 16. right click the executible file and go to properties, details

I think the OP should follow Sassa's advice, in this case.

Posting specs seems a bit unnecessary for this particular problem.

Sorry Ken. :o

If he can and we would know if we had his specs.

Try to install XP mode and run from there.

Great idea if he has enough memory +1 rep for the idea

We have been thru this before, and we both know our repective view points. It never hurts usually helps and is asked for when you sign up.

But hey thats only my opinion

Hey thanks

P-IVa with 3 gigs of ram is fine. Im not sure you have enough cpu to run a virtual xp machine sassa could probably tell you.

Check sassa's posts as his idea's usually work. if you tell us about the game we might be able to get it to run in compatibility mode. Try that for yourself. Right-click the file that launches the game and go to compatibility set it for XP compatibility and try it

Good luck and let us know

Ken

You will be able to run XP mode on your computer.
I can run it on mine with only 2gigs of Ram.

And I respect your opinion, and in most cases I agree it is the best way to go, but in some cases it's not worth the OP's trouble.
In this case I supported Sassa's idea because for the OP it is the quickest way to get to play his game.

The OP can decide which option to chose from.

What would the specs tell us about this particular game that runs in 256 color mode anyway?
He already tried every compatibility mode there is.

"Knights and Merchant" game is from 1998, (I played it back then) and if I'm not mistaking in XP it already had to be run in win98 or 95 compatibility mode, and I don't think it is going to run on Win7.

Having said all this, you are right his specs come into play in case he doesn't have a processor that support hardware virtualization.

In that case he should download and install "Virtual PC 2007" which doesn't require hardware virtualization, and install xp on that.

Greetz.

Edit:
Virtual PC RC only runs on CPU's with hardware virtualization!!
As far as I know Pentium IV does not have it.

You will need Virtual PC 2007
